Come now, let us give credit where it is due:  The marketing department of the Weather Channel actually found a way to make "cold weather in January" a national headline.  That takes some huge cajones.

2014-01-07 07:37:22 AM
It's 'only' 9 degrees here in Raleigh, with a 10mph wind. The wind's expected to get stronger after the sun comes up though so we've got that going for us too. News is reporting some people have power outages from transformer failures too...

It depends on how you dress them. Smart accessories are important in any season.

-4, with a wind chill of -35. Doesn't feel too bad, though. My son's school is closed for the day, and a lot of our patients are canceling appointments. So much for being hardy mountain folk.

14F in my area. Bunch of school closings because 'it's cold' and 'diesel  buses don't do well in cold weather' bullshiat. My wife's school and the others in the county are open and people are pissed. Some have sent hate mail to the local tv station.

Actually it's a feature of the atmosphere. The northern hemisphere has 2 vortices. One normally confined to NE Canada and another over Siberia

Greetings from Caronport (a bit outside Moose Jaw).

It was so cold that the extension cord BROKE when I went to plug the car in. It makes me wish I had gotten that job in New Orleans instead of here.

Lowest temp on record in DC at 4. Previous record was 5 degrees in the 1800s. We had a lot of rain and sleet yesterday so there's a good bit of black ice on the beltway. I'm giving in another hour or so before I bother to hit the road.

Yeah. Not my most brilliant moment. Learned that lesson real good. The new cord stays inside until it's needed.

Living near Baltimore during this is making me laugh.  Tons of school closings and delays, and people sniveling about the weather.  Last year, I was in Fairbanks, Alaska, freezing 100 proof liquor out on my porch.  Kids don't start having indoor recess up there until temperatures get below -20F.
