Why are people always surprised that in some pockets of the country people speak a very unique form of English very different from what they are used to? And this isn't specific to the South or to minorities, you go into parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan and you will see it.

Billified: Having lived in the Tallahassee/Panama City area many years, losing to FSU is pretty much the same as losing to another SEC team.

Yeah, it doesn't feel that different.  In terms of football, Alabama vs. Notre Dame last year was one of the most one-sided non-contests in college football history.  But at least it wasn't Rednecks vs. Rednecks (again) for the title, even if the outcome was as predictable as the fate of a young soldier in a war movie showing his platoon buddies a picture of his pregnant wife.

Bowl season is the one time of year I can look forward to more than the usual token OOC trans-continental cultural matchups.  Hey, at least as long as the two states don't border each other.  There was a decent amount this year, but in addition to FSU vs. Auburn -- which they may as well have played in Atlanta --  some of these were just downright awful:
Fresno State vs. USC (c'mon, man, SAME STATE!!)
Boise State vs. Oregon State
Pittsburgh vs. Bowling Green
Vanderbilt vs. Houston
Rice vs. Mississippi State
Oklahoma State vs. Missouri
. . . that's not even counting "conferences in each other's backyards" matchups like Oklahoma vs. Alabama.  That's a long drive but honestly, those two teams could play each other any time they want.  But they'd rather play UL-Monroe and Chattanooga so it takes a bowl game to get them to play each other.  UCLA vs. VT was a blowout but at least we got kids from opposite sides of the country trying to give each other brain damage.

Hey, a non-SEC team is the National Champion.  But it's a team from Florida.  Yay, the elite of college football has the cultural diversity of. . . well, the Bible Belt and that's about it.

IIRC, she tweeted that when one of the FSU players (their defensive MVP, I think) was up there.  He was a bit of a mushmouth - not that that's a big deal in this day and age, since you can speak borderline gibberish and still get hired to work the CBS pre-game show.

Bowl games are the only time in the season when butts in the seats matter more than eyes on a tv screen (outside of the BCS Bowls). Schedule two teams from opposite sides of the country and you may get a good match-up, but you'll also have a half-empty stadium.

That's why I'm happy my teams rival is OOC. I can still pull for the SEC in bowls for the good image of the conference with little problem. I even pulled a little for Ga, but couldn't get too upset when they lost. I certainly get why Bama fans couldn't pull for Auburn

Yeah, I tried to care about what the mother of a college athlete, dismayed at the loss suffered by a bitter-rival team tweeted.

But then I didn't.  There's horribly cold weather and a new NCAA football champion to discuss; why run this slow-news-day non-story?

Also, Subby: nice one.
