Yep. "Freedom of worship", all right.

Who is being stopped from worshiping?
Not erecting a statue does not interfere with any religious observances.

So we agree that a Christian monument on public land has nothing at all to do with the free exercise of religion.  Cool.  So why is it there, then?

Erecting a statue for one religion and refusing to erect a statue for any other religion makes it look like the first religion is being sponsored by the state, seeing as how the property said statues would be erected on is state property. Putting up the 10 commandments alone would not have been a violation of the first amendment, but their refusal to allow any other statue to be put up is what puts them in the wrong.

/ I'm surprised they haven't elected to display mr goat guy in the broom closet; it'd be displayed on public land and nobody could say shiat about it

Actually, make it a public auction and sell the parcels that way. An open bidding war is more honest and much more likely to result in overpaying because if you REALLY believe that the other guy is evil, you'll pay to shut him down. At which point, someone like a secular humanist group just keeps bidding to raise the price. Then the city council gets to brag about their awesome fundraiser idea and maybe adjust local property taxes because of all this extra money.

THAT'S thinking like a politician

If atheists, satanists,et al wanted to make a statement, they would take the money they are raising for the goat statue and use it for a real cause, such as the child who cannot blink and needs $20K just to be diagnosed (other link/thread). These people are proud to be harassing Christians when they could be doing actual good.

As someone who was raised a Satanist, I feel the exact same way about anyone who converted to Christianity or was "born again" as an adult.  Those people are not real Christians and just converted intentionally to have cover for why they are always dicks.

Hey, all I said was that they were being smarmy pricks, not that I disagreed about the First Amendment thing.

None of our laws are based on the ten commandments anyway, except stealing and killing (and the killing one is highly negotiable) and we could have figured those out ourselves. A couple of them are downright against our way of life. Coveting thy neighbor's shiat is the basis of capitalism. And not working on the sabbath? Tell that to my boss. So fark the ten commandments but fark those guys too.

Your point goes both ways. Christians could do a lot of actual good with the millions they spend running ads against marriage equality.

2014-01-06 06:37:55 PM

tjsands1118: I don't know about this statue. It's a pretty horrible design. I mean if they do it in stone I can guarantee you those thin little arms on the kids are going to snap off in no time. And I would hold much hope for the horns lasting long either.

But then again if they did it in bronze it would probably be fine.

Also what's with the blanket across the lap. The giant phallus is one of the defining characteristics of Baphomet.

2014-01-06 06:37:59 PM

Weaver95: I think the reason I can't take satanists seriously is because they need Christianity to define themselves. They lock themselves into a mythological cycle that is by and large defined by their avowed enemies.

To be fair, not all forms of Satanism are necessarily defined by Christianity. There are forms of theistic Satanism that view Satan as more of a pagan god that predated Judaism and Christianity. The name Satan is also sometimes interpreted as a bastardization of one of the titles of the Egyptian god Set, that being Set-an (if my memory serves me, this title means "Set is mighty"). Some taking a soft approach to polytheism might also view Satan as a cultural mask of a dark solar god present in many ancient religions and associate him with gods such as Set, Dionysos, Nergal, etc...

2014-01-06 06:39:34 PM
it would seem that these people aren't well liked in school, the workplace, or just creeping about the mall, even if they don't mention their religion

hells bells, if played right, the paganism angle might actually help a bit with the hostility that evidently comes with being anti-social, since most reasonable people take that sort of wtf-ery to mean "that boy ain't quite right, just nod and smile"

The statue has a flat back, meaning it really only works if it's being viewed from the front, but it won't have the advantage of a formal approach, like, say, walking up to the Lincoln Memorial. It also has *a lot* of arms and legs that are free, meaning there are lots of things that will break off over time and make a good target for vandals. There's also lots of places for water to pool and then freeze when winter comes. This is a pretty terrible design.

In Judaism, coveting is understood to require you to take an action, like, say, sending a soldier out to die so you can take his wife for yourself. It wasn't until Christianity came along that the concept of "thought crimes" was invented. That's why Jesus makes a big deal out of the teaching that looking at a chick and wanting to bang her is as bad as banging her - it was a novel idea.

Walker: After other groups - including PETA and the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster - asked for their own displays, the Oklahoma City Capitol Preservation Commission placed a moratorium on new monuments at the statehouse.

I love how once the Christians got what they wanted they immediately banned any more monuments. Typical Christian crap.

"OUR GOD IS THE ONLY GOD. F*CK YOU! F*CK YOU!"

As a Christian who can't stand this type of attitude, I really wish we were more like Muslims where artwork and statues are concerned. This insistence upon putting up a monument of some sort is straight up idolatry.

I'm sure you believe that and that it makes you feel better to say it, but that is simply not true. There are many Satanisms, and not all of them, even most, are LaVeyian in nature. Simply asserting their right to be equally visible in the dominant culture isn't being obnoxious, especially coupled with a legitimate Constitutional criticism of Dominionist government.

I'm not so interested in the Satanism (or whatever other mob of the righteously indignant) vs. Judeo Christian controversy.  What irritates me is the folks who DON'T live in or care about Oklahoma, wanting to erect their monuments here.  Yeah, I get the whole equality argument, so fine - let the Oklahoma chapter of satanists put up the monument they want.  This is clearly not that - it's just some obnoxiously self-important damned yankees wanting to troll a state they are unlikely to ever visit, because tee-hee equal rights herpaderp.  Trifling and pettiness; please go screw up your own state capitol, kthxbye.
