(YouTube)   Surfing is for easy going, laid back types who use it as an excuse to hang out in warm sunshine, and by "easy going, laid back types" we mean "hardcore lunatics" and by "warm sunshine" we mean "13 below zero"   (youtube.com) divider line 12

You're a real surfer when you have several wetsuits of different thicknesses.

Pneumonia comes and goes but a good wave is eternal.

I've always wondered which temperature wax would work in those conditions.  Waxing a board would be like scratching it with a rock.

When I was in Ireland last month, I wanted to go to Galway and try and surf. I should have waited until this month

How cold does it have to get for that water to freeze? I've seen salt water on Long Island, N.Y. frozen at considerably higher temperatures.

The open lake never freezes over, just the straits, bays, and shoreline. The lake is too active. Even the shoreline you can usually see the end of the ice a few hundred meters out, it's neat to watch the waves break against it.

I've got a few friends who surf Lake Michigan in the cold like that. They told me about this pretty good documentary about Great Lakes Surfing.

Unsalted: A Great Lakes Experience

Not too many people know that one of the original spots of surfing to really get solid footing was in Sheboygan, WI.
