I know you're probably joking here, but the NBA actually has a higher percentage of teams that make the playoffs (16/30 or 53%) than DI-Mens (68/351 or 19%) does.

In fact, DI-Mens Basketball probably has the lowest percentage of teams make the playoffs of any notable league with a playoff system.  NFL is 37.5%.  NHL is 53%.  MLB is 33%.  WNBA is 66%.  FCS football is 20%.  Once the FBS playoffs start, it will be lower, with only 3% of teams making it, but at the moment DI-Mens is probably the lowest.

Well, if you're talking 'still have a chance at the title', yeah, but there is also the interpretation of 'still playing after the end of the regular season'. Add in the NIT (32 teams), CBI (16 teams), and Collegeinsider.com (32 teams). 148 teams play some sort of postseason D1 basketball, making for 42% of the D1 field. And, for the record, FBS stands at 56%. MLS is at 52.6%.

Getting ride of Primo Pasta and Blackhole Rudy is actually (and I dont believe I am saying this) the easy part. Now getting the pieces they need to push beyond mediocrity is going to be Masai's true test as GM (even after considering the taxes and climate, why players would sooner play for Detroit, OKC, or Utah over TO is beyond me). And of course, they'll have to figure out what they want to do with Kyle Lowry and couch Casey. It's going to be hard to build through the draft too since they are winning and arent loaded with picks like the Celtics.

In a manner of speaking, EVERYONE makes the college basketball playoffs because they all (except the ivy league) have a conference tournament for an automatic bid. There's technically even hope for Umass Lowell!

In the same sense that everyone makes the World Cup

I heard on SportsCentre the other day (before this game, obviously), that the Raptors were above .500 for the first time in four (4!) years. How bad do you have to be to not go 1-0 or 2-1 to start the season?

Technically is a huuuuuuuuge stretch for UML.  They have as much hope of a title as I have of a porn-worthy threeway with Kari Byron and Morgan Smith Goodwin.

They must have been talking about this being the first time after a certain point in the season.  They opened 1-0 and 2-1 this season and 1-0 in 2011-12.

I am anti-rooting for the Bucks this year!  I am, in fact, quite pleased with their effort thus far.

And sure, Orlando is doing pretty well (poorly) right now, but I think our real challenger is Utah.  Sure, they've had a few mistakes (wins) recently, but I see a team there that can lose with the best (worst) of them.

So I looked this up (you all care, right?), and it's actually (almost) true!

2012-13: 2 Ls, W, 4 Ls, W, L, W, 6 Ls, W, 6 Ls ... never recovered.
2011-12: W, 3 Ls, 2 Ws, 2 Ls, W, 8 Ls .... never recovered
2010-11: L, W, 6 Ls ... never recovered
2009-10: Finished 40-42, peaked 31-24 (Feb. 10th), last above .500 April 3rd.

The last time the Raptors were more than one game above .500: March 5th, 2010, at 32-28, just before losing 5 straight.

Everyone in the EAST gets in.

T-Wolves are 10th in the west a game under.500 and would be a 5th seed in the east.

Not true. Did you know, that, as a matter of fact, only 8 teams get into the East, and that only 8 teams as well get into the West? This is shocking stuff, I know. It turns out that the same number of teams from each conference are sent to the playoffs each year, and I did noticed something was off because 15 eastern teams in the playoffs would mean that one team would have to play with itself, which would be quite an odd event and must have at least made for an amusing news story. I think what you mean to say instead is that bad teams get into the east, and that you wouldve reached that conclusion if not for the tricky dicky math involved of being able to count your fingers.

That last part doesn't make sense. They must have been more than one game above .500 for two more games (at 32-30, then 32-31).

Also, I think the big news items of the headline are, a) Raptors were over .500 in January, b) Raptors led the division, and c) Raptors in a playoff spot.

You're right, I phrased that poorly. That was the date of their last win before they dropped below the one-game-above-.500 threshold for the rest of time*.  And, now that you mention it, I remember hearing the SC anchors refer to the division-leading Raptors, and thought to myself: "Wow, that Rudy Gay trade must've really sparked something!", and while it did, it's a little sad that their standing comes primarily from others' awfulness.

If it sparks some more interest in the team (and hoepfully is something to build on) I, not a fan of basketball or the City of Toronto, will be happy for them and the region.

A while back they were putting together teams getting into the playoffs and interest was building, and then they fell apart.

We flipped over to NBA gametime during the NFL halftime to watch Kevin Love get fouled on a three point shot...down by two with no time on the clock. He misses his first two free throws. The look on his face was one I had not seen before.

d) all of which resulted from dumping talent and salary as part tanking for a draft pick, which means e) the Raptors are by far the worst franchise in NBA history as they've managed to turn winning into losing.

Name the point guard on 5 of the teams Kevin Garnett willed into the playoffs (ignore the Cassell/Sprewell year).

I believe the Raptors stat is: The franchise hadn't had a winning record after 30 games since moving to 19-18 on Jan. 8, 2010.

Toronto 101 at 88 Washington changed that.

Yep, it does. Love is a 1c-Chris Bosh-type on a champ team. Kevin was 1-B on his team. Pierce, Garnett, Allen in that order. All A level talent at the time.
