When I was a kid, one of the kids in my neighborhood learned how to throw a knuckleball from his dad. It was crazy, but terrifying when he pitched it because we never knew where the hell it would go. Sometimes it would be over the plate, sometimes it would crash into the dirt, and every now and then, it would crack you right in the ribs.

I thought this was common knowledge?

Seriously, didn't everyone know that?

The documentary "Knuckleball" (About Dickey, no less)  has some great slow mo footage of knuckleballs in flight.

Bob Uecker: "The way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling and then pick it up."

You'd think, but I've seen some pants-on-head levels of derp about the knuckleball right here on Fark, which is a nerdy population so I'd imagine understanding of the knuckleball is even worse among casual baseball fans.  It's actually a pretty hard pitch to understand, because the layman's understanding of chaos and randomness is very wrong.

The prof in OnlyM3's YT clip looks like he has a very poor knuckleballer to study.  Those pitches hardly dance and would be smashed consistently even by minor leaguers.  For starters, he's catching them (or the pitcher could just be throwing BP fastballs so the prof doesn't look bad -- can't tell because the video avoids showing the grip) when major league knuckleballs need catching specialists just to keep from shattering MLB passed ball records.

That said, that's the coolest clip I've seen that shows the knuckleball's wonkery.  You can see the batter's leg freeze when the ball jukes up and to the right.

I liked it. Much like a knuckler, it was a bit slow in spots but it was neat to watch.

Volleyball players will sometimes serve the ball with no spin, knowing that air currents within the arena can cause the ball to move.

IIRC, Russian officials were accused of opening and shutting doors in the volleyball venues to try and influence the level of movement.

This is high school stuff.

Yep.  I used to put the inflate hole facing down and then whack the serve side armed with no spin.  It would move two or three times side to side before crossing the net and plunging straight to the floor.  Never did manage to throw a decent knuckleball though.

Okay, I think I have a handle on this.  Comparing a knuckleball to a fastball is akin to compare a musket to a rifle.  I didn't bother watching the full video, only part.  Did they make a similar conclusion?

Really, all the talk is about Dickey, and none whatsoever about Wakefield?  One of the most successful knuckleball pitchers of all time???
