So nice of the story to tell us why the hell the guy was living on the street rather than back home with his family. Can he count to potato or what?

I found a flyer for him on my car this morning.  I am happy to learn that he was found and will be returned to his family soon.

I did get a chuckle at the caption, "a small upstate New York town."  The town where he is from is one of the largest outside of our city, with a population of nearly 100,000 people.

The story really needs to tell us what happened

They neglected to mention WHY he left all of his belongings behind. Mental illness? Intellectual disability? Criminal past? Or maybe I'm overthinking this and the guy just wanted to get away.

Martin, the AP photographer, said the episode serves as a reminder to journalists that every person they encounter has a story to tell.

Shame they didn't tell it.

He's 20.  Pretty much the top of the bell curve for age at first psychotic break.

Amazing the cops managed to do this without murdering a single dog

That's what I thought, and probably accounts for why his parents were so freaked out.

Hey submitter, how's Earth treating you so far?

My ex had a psychotic break once. For three days she took a break from being psychotic.

Yup. Living with your parents would suck, but you'd have to be actually crazy to leave a house for a sewer grate.

Yeah, but they DID taze him a couple times. Force of habit.

What the hell does this even mean?

Police picked Simmons up Sunday afternoon and took him to a hospital

It's truly wonderful when somebody who's mentally ill wins the Has-Family-Who-Can-Pay lotto.

Heh. One of my friends, who has New York mania, described my city of about 300k as "small and quaint." If you compare every city to NYC, they're all tiny.

/Likes "small and quaint"
//Prefers room for my elbows to move around, thank you

Our local paper included this gem which fell out of the linked article

"Nick is alive but obviously not well..we are going to get him home and safe and this is by far the greatest example of God's love and divine intervention I have ever experienced ...

Which is where you want to slap these idiots around a bit - God intervened to give him a psycho attack bc of his love ??? and then bc he's such a good guy he organized for the pic in the paper ???

I read the headline and immediately thought "Well that's a nice thing for the media and police to do.  I'll bet the homeless person was a young, white dude."  Then I thought "God dammit, darwinpolice, stop being so farking cynical."

*clicks article*

Sigh.

Regardless, it was a nice thing for the media and police to do, and I'm happy for the guy and his family.

Subby, a photographer is not a reporter, and their photographs tell the story, to those that think the story was not told. If you think they should be doing anything else 'useful' try it. It's not an easy gig.

Well that story sucked but the Mom said "Nick is alive but obviously not well" and that she would help him get better. I'm gonna guess schizophrenia.

Is this the same kid?

Maybe he's running away from an alleged assault and rape charge.
