d23: There is also a modem in Pennsylvania that everyone in New York will ignore.

That was a sprintmail.
The pony express of data transmission.
Easy to hack.
Easy to ignore.

How can people be so heartless?

I guess nobody RTFA as usual.

An preliminary inspection of the device showed it was actually a camera disguised as a flash drive, the officials said.

In the bathroom.  You figure it out.

I'm thinking one of the crew was hoping for some quality hidden camera perviness.

Perhaps they should use better camouflage.

You could easily find the perp if you were paying attention--he's the guy who quickly stopped using his laptop when it was discovered.

You honestly think he was sitting there watching people poop and pee on his laptop just like watching a movie. He would have to to be recording it.

I have heard of some crazy people watching porn on an airplane, assuming it just wasn't just a bad part of an nc17 movie. Doing that on a live bathroom cam I can't believe.

I do think he might have been doing some furious work scrubbing that encrypted partition of the hard drive before landing.

IoSaturnalia: PanicMan: No injuries related to the incident were reported.

Has a thumb drive ever caused an injury?

I hurt myself facepalming a few weeks ago when one of my customers found one in the parking lot at lunch.

Him: "Cool. Free USB stick!"

Please tell me he didn't put it in a computer.

Well, good thing it wasn't something dangerous, like a plastic spoon.

Sticking a well wrapped raspberry pi to the wall with some sort of official looking markings would be the way to do it.

That's only dangerous if he doesn't know how to do so safely. Like sticking your dick in crazy, you just have to weigh the potential benefits against the potential damage modified by how good you think you are at negating or ameliorating the latter.

So were talking about a restroom perv. really bad at hiding his camera.

I'll bet they'd divert if you left on the bathroom a Post-it bearing the text "There is absolutely no danger."
And if they found out you were the one that did it, you'd never fly again.

This is actually a tactic used by airline ground crews/ flight attendants for transporting drugs and other nefarious goods.

The USB had bitcoins loaded on it, there was probably several kilos of Kinder Eggs stashed in the cargo bay.

Not a good idea to do it on a plane.

Yup, although I question "disguised as a flash drive".  While I have not seen such devices I own a flash drive that is also an audio recorder.  "Disguised" is not the right word as it really is a fully operational flash drive--that's how you get your recordings off it.  I would figure a video version works the same way.

Forty-Two: the flash drive was found ominously taped to a bathroom wall.

That combination of words makes me giggle.

Yes. I'm still trying to picture that, and also the reverse...what would "innocently taped" look like, and how would you know?

2014-01-06 12:54:16 AM

serial_crusher: I hope we get a follow up to find out why the drive ended up taped there. I also hope it's some really whacky story that sounded like a good idea tithe guy at the time, not just an intentional bomb hoax or something stupid like that's.

it was a  micro camera. someone wanted video of folks using the bathroom. went in early in the flight and intended to retrieve it before the flight ended.

Update:  I found such a device:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2KA0YJ4872

Note that it requires you to insert a MicroSD card for storage, thus it's not a true flash drive.

I have a video camera that's also a flash drive that's disguised as a BIC lighter. It was like $14.00 on eBay and that included shipping from China. Kind of a pain to use though, as it only has one button and you have to remember how many times to press it and for how long in order to control the various functions.

Still though, $14.00! Can't watch a monkey fark a football for that kind of money.

I would do this on my laptop, removing the HD first, booting from a known good USB with an older Linux distro. Then I could mount that USB to see what's up.

This just in: Cambridge and Boston shut down when a floppy disk was discovered in an abandoned locker in the Barker Library at MIT.

CNN has reported a second modem has hit the pentagon.

Damn that's funny. But where is the evidence of said modem?!?

I keep mentally picturing the literal interpretation of modems hitting the Pentagon, and I'm sitting here giggling.
