Just a new way of doing the same thing that has been done for years.

Up and coming singers and bands still have their fans spam radio station request lines hoping to inflate the perception of interest in the artist. Which is why most radio stations ignore requests.

/Along with the fact that most of the time there isn't anyone actually there to answer the phone.
