Depends on if they included native Peruvians in their sample. Looks like they might have.

I was sorta hoping to see Ireland in there.

I wish they all could be Californian girls.

Presumably if you averaged them together right, they could.

Or they could be American or Canadian girls or even the most beautiful woman in the world. Beauty is largely the lack of deviations from symmetry, or averageness, so logically continuing he averaging process would produce Helen of Troy or Eve.

I wonder if the attractiveness of these faces is a side effect of the averaging techniques used, or whether there's something about median faces that is innately attractive to us.

2014-01-05 07:40:55 PM
While I like the idea that beauty is the sum of averages, I have to wonder whether the pics are generated from a truly uniform distribution. It might be that the people who volunteer to be photographed tend to be happy with how well they photograph, so the pics are biased toward good-looking people.

The downside of the beauty-is-being-perfectly-average idea is that while there's an absolute limit to how beautiful a person can be, there's no limit at all to how ugly a person can be.

Its been known for a long time (like, since the 1800's based on attempts to stereotype Victorian criminals who weren't the most attractive bunch) that when you average out a large number of people's faces that the result is fairly attractive. I've never seen an explanation of the effect though. Perhaps I'm taking an overly hippiefied sunshine-y view, but maybe we are more willing to overlook unexpected physical oddness and flaws than we think we are.

I can't decide. I'll take one of each.

Symmetry is supposed to be attractive. Averaging eliminates asymmetry.

Wouldn't oddness and flaws be averaged out in an averaged face?

In the comments, one of the commenters speculates that the averaging process causes or introduces a bias towards symmetry, which is associated with beauty.

I went to the website and picked out the ugliest, most lopsided faces, and the averaging resulted in a totally normal looking person, so they may be onto something there. Because I didn't pick a single person I found even mildly attractive.

They averaged together photos of the professional models from each of these countries. And the end result was a page full of women that just look American.

The only distinctive ones were Ethiopia and Chad/Cameroon.

Turkey, by far.  Then Sweden, England, and Thailand.

Also, despite what the article says, it looks like a simple linear compositing.  I guess they morphed the images to maps eyes, nose, and mouth first.  There's about ten samples in each.
