(CBC)   Well, Team Canada crashed and burned in another international hockey tournament, so it's time for Don Cherry to spin his Wheel of Random Excuses. This time, they lost because...oh, come on...are you ****ing kidding me?   (cbc.ca) divider line 66

Don's an ass. He might be right about the roster, but it's not political correctness, it's choosing the wrong players.
Sutter et al. don't give a shiat about who on the team speaks French.

Seeing you're from Ottawa I'm surprised you think there wouldn't be an uproar if there were no Quebecois boys on the roster. Irregardless of talent. I'm half french Canadian and the mix of hockey and french pride is quite volatile. I'm surprised that Quebac hasn't asked for a separate team with a "sovereign nation" angle.

There might be an uproar. That doesn't mean the team was chosen to placate the French. That's a dumb way to pick a team and I have a hard time believing it had any part in the choices.

You gotta know by now that international referees assume all Canadian players are thugs, so they have to play cleaner than any other team just to get a semi-fair chance. Don't cheap-shot some guy in the head and make it easy for them to job you out of a game.

Or, in summary, don't bring Drouin.

Kid's an amazing talent, but he's a prima-donna crybaby who can't control himself.  He's gonna bust out of the NHL in a big hurry if he doesn't grow up.

Is this the thread where OL comes in screaming about how everything was lopsided?

Good, because at the conclusion of the game there was some knob in a goofy hat doing weird head motions holding a sign that said, "hockey is STILL Canada's game!!!!!!".

I figured it was him.

Muta: Is it true that the rest of Canada pretty much hates the French Canadians?

I just hate the Quebec separatists. The strictly francophones have a reputation for being the most racist and exclusionary.
Don Cherry stopped being relevant 20 years ago. Team Canada has only fielded our very best players in the WJHC twice, when there were lockouts. They dominated both times. Every year it has been most of the top jr age players, while the very best are still playing in the NHL because their club team refuses to release them, feeling their development is most improved by staying in the NHL.
Hockey is very much a team game, and every year there are guys playing who might have a slight drop in skill, but their intangibles, like leadership, compensates for that. Every year a couple players don't make it, because they are rumored to lack character or are polarizing. Today, there are few surprizes, because each country and player is heavily scouted either in person or through game recordings.

Also, there's no reason to take the WJC so seriously. It's a developmental tournament. Making it out to be a point of national pride is just BS pressure for those kids. Leave that to the WC and Olympics.

Hockey IS Canada's game. We don't have the title because of tournaments.
We are the only country in the world who lists it as our national sport. We have the most hockey players in the world. Hockey is a big part of our whole culture. And our way of life.
Ice Hockey was also first played in Canada.
Ice Hockey is Canada. And there's not a farking thing you or anyone from any other country can say to change that.

That's like judging Germans by Hitler.

So will the victory of Finland, a country that breeds amazing goalies, bring up Canada's Junior goalie issues again (by not allowing forgein players)?

They may not be able to play for Team Canada, but perhaps bringing in talent from abroad to play with Canadians would help.

I'm not even exactly sure what he means by it being political. Is he arguing that the WJ team is too much of an even split between the west, ontario, and the Q, while it should be more ontario boys? I could see something like that being a valid complaint for someone to make. When i read the headline i was expecting him complaining about black and tan people on the team.

Ehhh don't be too quick on that.  Suter took a lot of heat in '06 for not having any Q players and loading the roster with WHL players.  Granted he won but it was still there.  Like it or not there is a lot of politicking in the WJC roster selection and it has been a sore spot in the past.  I'm not saying Don is right in this case, but there is a history.

Is no one going to call bullshiat here? USA won last year, Canada failed to medal.

And considering Gretzky played in the WJC way back when, this whole "Canada never fields its best team" argument is an even bigger pile of crap.

Get over yourselves, Canucks.
