Grantham just needs to make certain the insurance is paid up and burn the place to the ground, before retiring to the Riviera. We're in the interwar period. Embrace the nihilism!

That would be the best way to demonstrate how sh*t is changing.

And if they go with that, I might bother watching the show again.

Whar O'Brien? Whar?

Are there any fans of the show who really wait until the US gets around to airing it?

My wife and her friend are downstairs now watching it for the first time.

She didn't wait for Sherlock.

And the south of France was Vichy, which took less of a beating than England did in WW2.

I've had it for months but my wife's friends don't watch it till it get to the US so she made me wait.

Now that Matthew is gone though I'm not really that excited for it. Branson's still cool so hopefully they play him up more than they have.

Julian Fellows seems determined to burn the show to the ground based on this season (series), especially the Christmas episode.

I think he's bored to death with the whole thing.  I'm hoping they do one more on the eve of WWII and end it.

Milady is watching it for free in crystal-clear HD, courtesy "over the air television". It's a fascinating achievement.

Me. I dont know how much of a fan I am. But it beats Revenge and Once Upon A Time. Plus I can never figure out British TV. Nothing I have watched seems to have a set number of episodes or start date. "Luther" for example.

The Vicar of Dibley actually holds the record there: each series has a different number of episodes, scattered across 20 years.  It's part of the charm of English TV: you never know what you're going to get, and there's always a chance that a series which never got an ending will come back and wrap up.

What an absolute coup for Downton to get Gilbert Gottfried to play Lady Cora's playboy brother.

After the Simpsons parodied this as "Upton Rectory", I'll never be able to take it seriously.

I stopped watching this show after season one. It started to feel like the writers were developing characters based on the musings of the twitterverse.

Sherlock? First episode was News Years Day. Second was last night and the third is next Sunday.

And then we're done for another year or two. :(

I'm going to be watching Archer when it appears on Chinese Flash sites, because otherwise it means waiting 6 months for the UK release.

Seriously, stick it on iTunes and you can charge me £2/episode and I will gladly pay it.

With a final scene flashing forward to the present. Downton is now an upscale hotel. The Dowager Countess has outlived everyone. She still lives there, and wanders around being a smartass and complaining about the commoners overrunning the place.

When you realize that Matthew's heir will turn 18 in 1940 and thus be old enough to fight in WWII, it opens up some interesting possibilities for future stories.

No... we pretend eveyrone is.  It's our national myth, much like doing this or that in the name of The Queen.  We pretend to be a class-less society.

I think that's the big draw - there's no confusion in Downton about status, while the status quo in the US is to pretend that we are the same class, and discussion is a rude transgression of an unspoken more.

/ The biggest indicator is that each level down the class scale sees class as more fully rooted in monetary wealth.
