In most situations, yes. But in case of Rubber vs. Glue, the court concluded that in a group larger than 4, a double dog dare may fall short.

I've never seen the entire film, in order, from beginning to end, but I suspect I've seen nearly all of it in disconnected chunks on other peoples' TVs over the years - the frozen pole scene probably most of all.  How did these parents need 15 minutes to figure out "warm water will fix this"?

This happened to me on the front bumper of my father's car. I don't remember much about it but I think it must have been my lips and not my tongue that got stuck because it was accidental: I slipped. The news weren't called and I although I don't remember how I was unstuck I don't think it took long.

On another occasion I dropped something under the outdoor basement stairs and got my head stuck while retrieving whatever it was. This one was my fault. A piece of wood was used as a lever to distance to two stairs so I could remove my head. Once more the news were not contacted.

One winter day, during recess in 4th grade I conducted a test

I had heard about this phenomenon and being an empiricist  from an early age I couldn't let this go unproved.

Proven.  Didn't make the news.  Once I realized the state I was in I decided leaving a bit of skin on the swingset leg (ouch!) was better than being known as 'that kid'.

True story.

That was also the year I got in trouble for passing around pieces of azurite with the assurance that it was blue rock candy, you'll love it.

Rite of passage. The dumb kids need hospitalization. The smart kids know their tongue will freeze to the metal and only barely touch the tip of their tongue to the metal.

This is the farking problem with healthcare

If she stuck a significant part of her tongue to the pole, there is absolutely no reason NOT to go to the ER. The tongue carries a lot of blood vessels, and they don't like to clot when you rip them open.

For comparison, she could have had anywhere from a nasty cat scratch type wound, to a tear across the whole top of her tongue. Torn flesh is just NASTY to heal.

Nothing.

Honestly, I don't understand how this can happen, but here you go, kids: This is how you deal with it if you do get your tongue stuck to something in the winter time:

1. Calm down. Don't pull away, you'll only tear your skin.
2. Close your mouth and let as much saliva as you can muster build up in there.
3. Once you've accumulated a a mouthful of hot saliva, open  your mouth and carefully let it drool down your tongue to the contact point. It  should  be warm enough to release you. It shouldn't freeze fast enough to cause further problems.
4. Don't do this if you're in ridiculously cold climates, like Antarctica. The spit will freeze. Michigan or Canada, though? Sure, it should work.

Seriously. Use your brains, kids. At 12 years old this kid should have been able to think her way out of this.

2014-01-05 10:58:12 PM
I don't know who put her up to this, but I'm sure that the pain and guilt they feel is far worse than any punishment I could dish out.

2014-01-05 11:36:06 PM
Why would this make her popular? More like open to considerably large amounts of ridicule.

All they had to do was to turn off the suction in the plastic pipe made to look like a steel pole.

They used warm water to remove it, that doesn't mean there couldn't have been serious damage. It could have required stitches, and was probably bleeding pretty badly.

From TFA: "The swelling in her mouth is expected to last about six weeks."

Yeah, I was into experimenting with poles when I was a kid too, but it was more along the lines of exploring the funny feeling you get when you shimmy up them, like climbing the ropes in gym.

One of my friends filled a windex bottle with blue cool-aid and was spraying it into his mouth on April 1. Maybe I'll try that sometime.
