Not really.

The reason so many people use adblock is that they're leeches who can't play fair with the most democratic and efficient manner of financing the web.

QFT. I don't mind advertising (sometimes it even alerts me to products/services that are both relevant AND less expensive), but I loathe Java/Flash ads; they slow my browsing down, randomly get noisy, and can be malware vectors. No thanks!

Yes indeed.  It's horrible how these people have the audacity to block ads and even run anti-malware software, preventing phishers from getting access to their credit cards and Paypal accounts so they can feed their humble familes and keep the internet running.

I actually like this trend towards inline sponsored content (marked as such) that takes the same form factor as a site's normal content, and hope it settles in as the standard going forward.  The traditional methods of Autoplay flash ads, popups, and popovers are shiat, plain and simple.  They're intrusive, slow down performance, exhibit utter contempt for the viewer, and of course are easy vectors for malware.

And I can't speak for everyone, but I still pay plenty of attention to TV ads even with DVR.  I probably pay more attention since I don't get up to leave and come back.  I fast-forward, but stop and watch if something catches my eye.  I wouldn't be surprised if DVR has had no negative impact on ad effectiveness, maybe even a positive one.  The only thing that suffers are syndicated/rerun shows spammed across the schedule that non-DVR channel-surfers get hooked on because they don't get to watch on their terms.

After a malware injection from the FARK servers, I get that image a lot too.  But only at home.  The computers at work are locked down, so I make do with just not viewing FARK at all from work.

DIAF. A simple banner is one thing. Full blown video w/ sound, pop-ups, pop-unders, click-throughs, animation overlays, side-banner wallpaper... entirely different. Then there's that BuzzFeed crap...

JSOnline, regularly linked to here on Fark, recently logged 36 blocked ads on one visit, just on their home page. And that's not excessive for what reason? ESPECIALLY since they're now behind a pay wall?

I'm more shocked at the notion Flash was 'preferred' over Java at any point or time. I always viewed it as the choice between which would be less of a complete pain in the arse for any given application.

Exactly.

If it were just banners or small things in the sidebar, sure. But hell no. Popups, popunders, things that cover the screen (loading five seconds after the page does), autoplay videos, and ad servers that aren't working properly and slow EVERYTHING down, I'll take AdBlock, thanks.

If you want to finance your site through ads, feel free to do as Fark does- park a small banner asking you to whitelist the site or take a paid option to support things. But if I whitelist you, I'd better not start seeing those damned jiggling ads about one weird trick or having the site load slowly because one of your adservers is running on a 286 located on a dialup connection in Ulan Bator. I see that, it's back on and go fark yourself.

Once upon a time when I visited a normal website and I heard Java spinning up from the harddrive, I got a toggle on my browser, so Java stays off unless needed. No need for Java, but the site wanted it on.

/Flashblock toggle

In other news, did Yahoo break POP mail access again?  When it broke for me, I went to mail.Yahoo and I see the wonderful offer of ad-free mail on the web for the low, low, low price of $49.99 a year.

Bad enough that they used to charge $19.99 a year just to get POP access.

Fark 'em. I'll replace my email address at any non-shopping crap site.

Drew is smart not to have comments available on sponsored links though. He tried that before and we trashed the company.

Be fair, we didn't know that that Buzzfeed link was sponsored.  We just commented on it like we would have any other Buzzfeed article.

I rarely click on ads, and don't have Java installed (never seen where I needed it), so there's always that.
