Despite all evidence the contrary I still picture the UK to be exactly like it was presented in European Vacation.

The 18% raise was last year, not this year. Not that that stops the press from savagely attacking sensible advice just because it comes from a vested interest.

Of course, the price of oil fell last year, so you can't blame the electric company for increasing prices to boost yearly revenues.

TFA:  It also suggested consumers "give up caffeine" as by not boiling a kettle for two days a week they could save about £10 a year.

HERESY!

As bad as things seem to be getting in the US, I can rest comfortably at night knowing it's better than life in the EU.

Isn't increasing the cost of energy one of the ways the greens want to induce us to use less? That and relentless haranguing.

I don't see how showering in pairs would save energy. Showering with my girlfriend always turns into an incredibly long endeavor, what with all the soaping of the breasts that I must do, and the thorough lathering of her firm buttocks. Enough of that, and then she joins in, polishing my turgid man-meat with her soft tongue. By the time she's done with that and I've pinned her against the stall wall to reward her with a good impaling, the damn water is starting to get cold. It's gotta be a good 50-60 gallon expenditure.

So it depends on *where* you are in the EU.

US vs. Germany/UK/Scandinavia, I can see either way (if only because the USA is not monolithic, and NW Europe is basically NE/West Coast USA done right).
US vs. Latvia/Greece/Poland, right there with Fark_Guy_Rob.

/Seriously, if I'm paying European-level taxes and European energy prices, can I get European levels of services?  Because if we could combine European services with US beliefs on the place and role of government, that could work.

Nah - I'm being quite serious.  I live in the EU, trust me, things aren't perfect in the US - but they are better.

This "sensible advice" would save £34 a year. Whoop-dee-farking-doo

The US doesn't have as many muslims either.  That alone makes the US superior

They're not really an electric company in the "generate power" sense. They buy electricity from other suppliers and resell it. They use smart meters for all of their customers, and are pushing home automation.
They're supposedly cheaper, too, but you know how that goes.

Maybe if you showered more then once a decade you wouldn't be expending so much per session?  That and now she's gotta shower even longer in that cold water to get rid of the mess.

Splash in the tub to save energy, not time.

We moved to France from North America, and by 'better,' I don't know what you mean...we've got great services, I make a good living, loads of vacation, plus there's a certain quality of life associated with the European lifestyle. I've been back to NA twice since we left, and I can only see it as a (mostly) dumpy and soul-less place now.

You'd have to pay me a ton of money to move to the US.

Well, you should have tried living in the United States instead of Canada or Mexico, then.

Scottish Power came to take a mandatory reading of my meter this one time. 2 old dudes, one of which spent the entire time in my toilet. The other dude was up the top of a small ladder, as the meter in my apartment was for some reason almost at ceiling level.

There was some cable or something loose. It had been like that since I moved in there years before. There was dust on it. Ladder Guy was all like 'Uh oh, what have you done to this? Have you touched this? (he said it like he meant tampered rather than brushed against).

Bastage basically accused me of messing with it to 'turn the wheel back'. I had no clue what he was talking about.

/fark scottish power.

Wait, who doesn't like showering with their significant other? I feel sad for these people.
