Obamacare is giving out flu shots in Canada?  Isn't that a little bit out of their jurisdiction?

2014-01-05 09:08:25 AM
Now there's a legitimate reason for a syringe to make an appearance at your local Canadian waterin' hole.

Tell me about flu shots when it isn't a crap shoot of effectiveness, then I'll take it like all my other shots that take care of the problem they are named for.

Cheaper in the long run to immunise people rather than have them crowding doctor's offices and ER's for the rest of the winter?  The hell you sayin', rube?

2014-01-05 09:10:53 AM
Meh, call me when they start darting people like rhinos to give them flu shots.

2014-01-05 09:11:10 AM

In bars?  Can you consent when drunk?

This sounds like the beginning of a dystopic novel.  They're testing a serum on the helpless.

And how does Canada's health care have anything to do with Obamacare?  We're comparing apples and oranges here.

So you don't do anything that isn't 100% guaranteed or is your derp limited to what you imagine flu shots to be?

Please tell me how the Measles Mumps Rubella vaccine isn't 100% effective and then explain how the flu shot isn't a guessing game by the manufacturers of it as to which two or three of the dozens of strains of influenza they believe may be prevalent this season and that's what they build the shot off each year.

Sorry but the last thing I want is some guy coming at me with a needle in a bar.

2014-01-05 09:32:53 AM
I was in a local tavern known as the "Puck off" and I'd had a nice Molson or two when I was feeling three sheets to the wind. Long story short, me and this gal ended up in a toilet stall sharing a needle and injecting ourselves with the flue shot after we'd got the serum to a nice boil in our spoon first.
I'm happy to say I am flue free and I'm HIV positive I'm going to stay that way this season!
Thanks Canada!

The Conservative party, the Canadian equivalent to US Republicans, is making sure that all girls in Canada are getting vaccinated against HPV by making Gardasil available for all of them.

The Conservative party of Canada actually follows conservative principles and policies.  The GOP in the US, on the other hand, is just a package of knee jerk wedge issues wrapped around a pro-billionaire philosophy.  For example, they believe vaccinating young girls against a potentially fatal disease will turn them into ravenous sex addicts, or, something.  Anything to do with sex is bad, though they like to pretend that they're against abortion for moral reasons and it's not just another sex related wedge issue.

It's embarrassing.

This. It is economically wise to pay a little bit of money to keep our janitors and maids from getting sick and missing work or, even worse, selfishly coming in sick (just because they get no paid sick days) and contaminating productive members of society.

Wearing a helmet won't guarantee you live through a motorcycle accident, but it increases your odds. Also, it's not like they're just throwing darts, they compile research about what's likely to be a prevalent strain of influenza.

The CDC says the MMR is 95% effective and even with a 2nd dose there is still a small percentage of people who won't develop an immunity. You will never see the CDC say any vaccine is 100% because there isn't such a thing.

Yep, and this year it's H1N1. I got my shot because I sure don't want that flu. This is my first year of the shot following three bouts of the flu in three years. My cousin and her three kids all have H1N1. I don't want that here. You can get a flu shot in a lot of places right now, pharmacies, your doctor's office, bars apparently. It's a good idea to get it.

No, you idiot, I ordered a ROUND of shots. Get that needle away from me.

I dunno about that, but I had to wait two months to get a physical with my GP. And four months to see a nerve specialist. And I have good insurance. USA! USA! USA!

Problem is the people who need it will refuse it.

And this has nothing to do with Obama Care, hell flu vaccines have been extremely cheap for quite sometime and people still don't get them.

Depends on how important it is.
MRI and CT scans get scheduled partially on triage basis from my anecdotal experience.

I actually got in for two CTs within a month when I was having headache issues out of the blue at one point.

Some people who have a bum knee might wait a few months for an mri but if it's something potentially life threatening, and you've got a decent gp - they'll get you booked in.

Also I'm finding more family practices these days are getting some basic machines that they used to only have at specialist offices or booked at a hospital.

Agreed, just recently started working for a company that cares enough to insure it's employees.  It's amazing when you can actually see a doctor.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Seriously.  I don't get what all the complaining about high taxes in countries like Canada, or in the Scandinavian countries is about.

You're paying taxes, and getting essential public services in response.

I already pay over 10% of my income for healthcare, between my out-of-pocket for premiums for myself, my wife and my son, our dental premiums, and co-pay's and prescriptions it's over 10%.

Frankly, I'd rather just pay higher taxes and not have to worry about making a separate payment to different insurance providers, then the burden of medical billing every time we go to the doctor.

In the "Nordic Model" countries, yeah, they pay sky-high taxes, but they never have to worry about paying for education, including up to the college level, never have to worry about paying for healthcare, have a comprehensive cradle-to-grave public social welfare system.  They've got longer lifespans, lower crime rates, and very little homelessness.  They have basically cured most of the routine social ills our country suffers from. . .and it all began with higher taxes and putting that tax money to good use.

Rich people don't care about any of that.
And they've convinced some stupid people not to care either, with religion, politics, or whatever means they can.

I wonder if someone has done a cost benefit analysis of flu shots. It wouldn't surprise me if it would pay for itself or nearly so by preventing illness, treating the illness and lost hours to the economy.

Yes. The average productivity lost, per day per employee, is ~$60 a day. This was 2 years ago ui saw this number.
