SEE?? THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE ALEX SMITH AS YOUR QUARTERBACK!! YOU GIVE UP A 28 POINT LEAD IN THE SECOND HALF!! HE CHOKES WHEN IT MATTERS MOST!!!

It wasn't Smith's fault as much as it was the defense's fault. Smith actually did pretty well.

This.  If you score 44 points and lose, the problem is likely not the QB.

Smith went for 378 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTs (although he did have the fumble), another 57 yards on the ground, and put up 44 points.  Oh, and he did that on the road and missing a guy that accounted for a full third of the Chiefs offense during the regular season.

But yeah, that loss is totally on him and not on the second half defense that redefined "epic fail".

Smith could hardly have played better.  30/46 for 378 and 4 TDs with 0 INTs.  How much more performance do you want out of your quarterback?

If you're really a 49ers fan, you're just bitter because Harbaugh was dumb enough to let the better quarterback go.  Yes, that's right:  Smith > Kaepernick.  WTF did Kaepernick do this season to impress you, besides lead the NFL's least productive passing offense into the playoffs on the coattails of a great running game and a great defense?  The bicep-kissing man just isn't all that, as you'll find out over the course of the next season or two, until he's cut and moves onto some other team as a second-rate backup.

You DO realize you just equated Kaeopectate or whatever his name is to "Trent Dilfer" status, right?

Not that I'm arguing. I'm just pointing it out.

Don't go giving Kaepernick accolades he hasn't earned.  Trent Dilfer has a super bowl ring, Kaepernick doesn't. That's not to say he won't get the opportunity at some point but Dilfer has been at the mountain top and Kaepernick is still staring up at the summit.

Smith played a great game and didn't choke at all.  The football gods, for some reason, struck with furious vengeance against the Chiefs today, and for a while I thought the injuries might never end.  Can't remember the last time I saw such a string of damage leveled against a single team in the course of a single game.  If the Chiefs had somehow survived today to fight another game, they would have been going into next weekend seriously depleted.  I suppose that's Smith's fault too?

Injuries happen to every team and occur during the games. However, did anyone see what Andy Reid did to the football gods to cause them to strike down his team with such fury and vengeance?  Sometimes it's just not your night and as the Chiefs kept adapting and putting up points more and more players were struck down. They still barely missed having a chance for the winning field goal off the sideline by Bowe but of course he allowed himself to be pushed out.

If you asked any Chief's fan what they thought the outcome would be losing Jamaal Charles in the opening few minutes, I doubt they would have suggested such a high scoring game.  I am thankful it was competitive and interesting toward the end given the adversity the Chiefs had to go through. Of course they are upset, but nearly pulled it off.  Of course almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Even if they did pull it off, the injuries suffered may have crippled them moving forward.

For the fans, yes indeed. For the actual Chiefs team, they should be embarrassed that they blew a 28 point lead. Absolutely inexcusable.

You got trolled hard.

As to Smith versus Kaepernick...

Both of them are very good, and both have played very well in the postseason.  Smith played very well tonight, and led the Niners to two last minute comebacks in the same game against the Saints two years ago.  Kaepernick set the alltime record for QB rushing yards (in any game, not just postseason) against the Packers last year, beat a very good (ha!) Falcons team (in Atlanta, I think), and has been pretty great this year as well (91.6 passer rating, 7.7 yards per attempt, 5.7 yards per carry).

Switching QBs looks like the right move for the Niners if only to get younger and lower their cap hit at QB.  But if you want to keep going on about how a guy who is 17-7 and only 26 years old must suck because you're sad about the Chiefs, that's cool.

I heard they decided to play by professional football rules for this game. Sadly for this quality screenshot, that requires 2 feet in bounds.

Smith doesn't deserve all the flack he's getting. The strip sack was inevitable as Mathis was on the field. Smith did a ton, especially after the glass jaw flu hit the chiefs. However that intentional grounding play absolutely killed the chiefs on that last drives.

Too bad this is the pros, not college, and you need both feet inbounds.

You guys did just win the MLS Cup, though, so there's that. My Revolution have never managed, and they've been there four times.

Mentat: And anyone blaming Alex Smith is a damn moron.  That guy has fought all year long.  The only thing he did wrong today was the fumble and that was because his line kept letting the Colts defense through.  Smith could only scramble away or shovel pass so many times before something went wrong.  No, this game is on the secondary.  Once again, they were completely clueless, missing their assignments, being out of position and getting straight up beaten on routes.  The Chiefs D was even getting a pass rush today.  How you force 4 turnovers and blow a 28 point lead I will never know.

This.

Yep.  Alex Smith didn't give up 443 yards passing.

jayhawk88: - Stop with the "Andy Reid timeouts LOL" crap. Both those timeouts were to prevent 5 yard penalties in crucial situations. Plus, did Reid even take them? Looked like it was Smith in both cases.

Oddly enough, people kept blaming McNabb for the exact same thing - having to waste a TO because there was only 2 left on the play clock and the offense wasn't set. And then it would happen with McNabb's backups. And then Vick.

Maybe there's another problem? Such as the play calls not getting in on time, or being so confusing that the QB has no clue what's going on until it's too late?

Don't blame Cassel. He was blossoming in New England and we all would have been fine with him as our QB for the next ten years if Brady couldn't come back from his knee injury. You broke him.
