Smith could hardly have played better.  30/46 for 378 and 4 TDs with 0 INTs.  How much more performance do you want out of your quarterback?

If you're really a 49ers fan, you're just bitter because Harbaugh was dumb enough to let the better quarterback go.  Yes, that's right:  Smith > Kaepernick.  WTF did Kaepernick do this season to impress you, besides lead the NFL's least productive passing offense into the playoffs on the coattails of a great running game and a great defense?  The bicep-kissing man just isn't all that, as you'll find out over the course of the next season or two, until he's cut and moves onto some other team as a second-rate backup.

You DO realize you just equated Kaeopectate or whatever his name is to "Trent Dilfer" status, right?

Not that I'm arguing. I'm just pointing it out.

Don't go giving Kaepernick accolades he hasn't earned.  Trent Dilfer has a super bowl ring, Kaepernick doesn't. That's not to say he won't get the opportunity at some point but Dilfer has been at the mountain top and Kaepernick is still staring up at the summit.

They haven't beat anyone worth a damn all year.  They had 2 wins in the Division.  I wasn't surprised when they got out to that lead (because the Colts are not good either), but I also wasn't surprised when they blew it.  They're not that good.

/great, now I just totally jinxed the Chargers.
//also not that good, but at least they beat a bunch of playoff teams.

Don't understand how any knowledgeable football fan could fault the Chiefs for using up that last timeout when they did.  It's 4th and long, that's your season right there.  If they don't take the timeout and don't convert, Indy pretty much runs down the clock anyway.  You gotta make sure you have the right play in mind on 4th down there, and they pretty much did until Bowe got nudged just enough out of bounds.

2014-01-05 12:14:19 AM
the QB has no clue what's going on until it's too late?

sounds like Harbaugh & the 49ers

Mentat: And anyone blaming Alex Smith is a damn moron.  That guy has fought all year long.  The only thing he did wrong today was the fumble and that was because his line kept letting the Colts defense through.  Smith could only scramble away or shovel pass so many times before something went wrong.  No, this game is on the secondary.  Once again, they were completely clueless, missing their assignments, being out of position and getting straight up beaten on routes.  The Chiefs D was even getting a pass rush today.  How you force 4 turnovers and blow a 28 point lead I will never know.

This.

Chiefs gave up

It wasn't Smith's fault as much as it was the defense's fault. Smith actually did pretty well.

This.  If you score 44 points and lose, the problem is likely not the QB.

Yep.  Alex Smith didn't give up 443 yards passing.

Admirable trolling on Alex Smith.

Can't much fault the timeout calls.  So what if they called a timeout after the two minute warning?  The play they ended up going with worked to perfection...if the field is 53 2/3 yards wide, instead of the actual 53 1/3 yards.  Bowe is a big dude, he's got to give himself more space there.

Too bad this is the pros, not college, and you need both feet inbounds.

You guys did just win the MLS Cup, though, so there's that. My Revolution have never managed, and they've been there four times.

That sounds about right.  He better hope that defense holds up over time (and I'm thinking it's not built for the long haul at this point, once Aldon Smith is in jail where he belongs), or he's never getting within sniffing distance of a ring again.  He was lucky to get there once, lucky like a badly-timed Alex Smith injury.

Smith doesn't deserve all the flack he's getting. The strip sack was inevitable as Mathis was on the field. Smith did a ton, especially after the glass jaw flu hit the chiefs. However that intentional grounding play absolutely killed the chiefs on that last drives.

Timeout #3 by KC at 02:00.

Lets take a timeout after the Two-Minute Warning.... BRILLIANT!!! I wish Andy Reid still coached in the NFC East because, he's a clock management Wizard.

I get that, but I fail to see how having more timeouts would have affected the outcome of this game. You either make the plays or you don't. There wasn't a time issue.

You got trolled hard.

As to Smith versus Kaepernick...

Both of them are very good, and both have played very well in the postseason.  Smith played very well tonight, and led the Niners to two last minute comebacks in the same game against the Saints two years ago.  Kaepernick set the alltime record for QB rushing yards (in any game, not just postseason) against the Packers last year, beat a very good (ha!) Falcons team (in Atlanta, I think), and has been pretty great this year as well (91.6 passer rating, 7.7 yards per attempt, 5.7 yards per carry).

Switching QBs looks like the right move for the Niners if only to get younger and lower their cap hit at QB.  But if you want to keep going on about how a guy who is 17-7 and only 26 years old must suck because you're sad about the Chiefs, that's cool.

Alex Smith did everything right to win this game. It's just unfortunate that the rest of his team wasn't healthy enough to close the deal. Though, even if the Chiefs somehow eeked out a win today, their postseason would basically have been finished anyway due to the injuries.

Actually they broke the Reid curse..  Defense struggled all game but the Eagles did mount a comeback to take the lead..  That's almost unheard of. They didn't choke offensively.. Foles kept his composure despite the amount of pressure he was under against a insane coverage defense.

Actually, regarding that final play.

Yes, clearly he had the right foot out of bounds.  But...let's say he got it in.  Right on the edge, but he makes it.  2 feet inbounds, but it's initially _called_ out of bounds.

Would the Chiefs still have been screwed because they had no timeouts, and thus, to my understanding, be unable to challange?  Or would that sort of play be automatically reviewed?

I'm a Seahawks fan so I have no horse in this race.  They are two very different quarterbacks, to put it in a nutshell Smith is very conservative and Kaepernick is a cowboy.  Yes, Kaepernick posts reasonable numbers, even if his passing production and efficiency isn't much to look at.  But I think that Smith understands the game very well - he's got football smarts - while Kaepernick strikes me as someone who only plays well because his coach wouldn't allow anything else.  i.e. if Kaepernick were to screw off too much, he'd be yanked...but make no mistake, Kaepernick's natural tendency is to screw off, and he does plenty of that.  I don't think he's that smart, and I don't respect the way he got his job, nor do I respect Harbaugh's handling of that situation.  If he wanted Kaepernick all along, he didn't need to wait for Smith to get injured...oh wait, yes he did because there was no good justification for replacing him.  Smith is 29, not exactly Methuselah, so I don't much buy that argument either.  The 49ers would have been better off trading Kaepernick and retaining Smith, IMO.

I could totally be wrong.  And I concede this might just be a matter of personal taste.  I respect players who are students of the game, and Smith's improvement over the years tells me he's a student because that's about the only way he could have improved to the point that he has.  Kaepernick, with his tattoo sleeves and habit of bicep kissing, seems too full of himself for someone who puts up such anemic production.  I think the 49ers are winning largely in spite of him, not because of him.  Contrast with the Seahawks, who also don't have the league's #1 passing attack in terms of sheer numbers, but note that that's by design, and that Russell Wilson and his smarts on the field is a huge part of why the Seahawks win so many games.  I think Smith is similar, if much more conservative even than Wilson.  I get the feeling that the 49ers could win just as much if not more if they had a quarterback who wasn't so full of himself.

No, in the last two minutes of each half, reviews are automatic and don't have to be challenged by the team in question.  If he'd gotten that foot inbounds and the replay showed it, the Chiefs would have had the ball there.

2014-01-05 10:42:14 AM
That loss was all down to defense, or the fact the Chiefs didn't have any. Alex Smith played well, but the Chiefs defense couldn't stop a PeeWee team last night. I was checking into to game regular, and when I saw the Chiefs up 31-10, I thought they had it in the bag. Then I saw the Colts scored. I immediately thought the Colts were gonna pull it out because it seemed that KC was playing prevent defense the rest of the night.Andy Reid better call Mayflower, because if I'm the Chiefs owner, that loss is inexcusable.
