Among Zaentz's other films were the 1978 animated version of "The Lord of the Rings," which later paved the way for the blockbuster live action trilogy.

Huh? I wasn't aware the 1978 movie had jack squat to do with the Jackson films.

How did CCR get farked over? According to the movies I've seen, they were one of only 4 groups who the Army let send tapes over to our troops during Nam.

He 'passed on' WHAT, Subby???

Either say he DIED or go eat a bag of dicks

/Death happens. Get used to it.
//Death sometimes happens crossing the street on a beautiful day with the birds chirping and the kids laughing and SPLAT as the bus hits you and drags you for a few feet underneath and then flattens you with the tire, sometime causing much goo to spray out of your new orifices, but you are dead, so it does not matter, except to the jerk who biatches about tagging and bagging you.

The headline should have been something like "Fantasy records founder Saul Zaentz dies at age 92, definitely kant danz now"

/and I definitely agree that anyone who uses "passes" or "passed" should get a hardy cockpunch. Passed what? His road test? Finals? a kidney stone? HE DIED.

Amadeus is my all-time favorite movie.

All I wanted was to sing to God. He gave me that longing... and then made me mute. Why? Tell me that. If He didn't want me to praise him with music, why implant the desire? Like a lust in my body! And then deny me the talent?

fark yeah. Story of my life.

Zaentz lost his lawsuit against Fogerty claiming the musician's song "Old Man Down the Road" copied the melody from "Run Through the Jungle," a Creedence tune that remained in the Fantasy library.

???

The film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest cut so much of the book out that I was disappointed in the film, although I acknowledge that it's a classic.

Amadeus and The English Patient are both on my all time Top-25 list, though. Amadeus had the challenge of filming in Eastern Europe before the wall fell, and The English Patient looks like it had a much bigger budget than it did. That's great producing. RIP.

Although he did not start Fantasy Records, he was the owner when CCR hit big. He was the west coast version of Allen Klein.

I stand corrected.

If submitting, I would have actually looked that up.

/apparently, Fogerty vs. Fantasy (Zaentz) was a big decision as far as awarding attorney's fees in copyright infringement suits.

He sued Fogerty for plagiarism of a song which Fogerty wrote but which Zaentz had stolen the rights to (along with the rest of the CCR catalog).

Plus, the real honors of Cuckoos nest goe to Michael Douglas getting Kirk his father to buy the rights.

And one of the first things the new owners of Fantasy did after Zaentz sod the company was make nice with Fogerty. Hell, he even ended up back on the label for a couple albums.

Not an uncommon occurrence when someone has been screwed over the in the record business: they resign with the original label for a hefty bonus which actually constitutes unpaid back royalties.  We were talking about that recently in a thread about U2 resigning with Island after almost a decade on Mercury.

But a producer is just a manager. Apart from arranging the finances, what effect does he have on the film itself?

Handles crew staffing, location problems, on set finances, i.e. payroll, overtime, liason between the filmmakers and studio brass, and basically makes sure the director has everything he needs so he can just focus on the story being told.

In other words, they handle all the business parts of show business.

It really depends on the situation: some producers do very little, some chose the director and get out of the way, and some are involved in shaping the story from day one and every detail which comes after.

Generally speaking, a good producer should keep on top of all the financial and logistical stuff so the director can focus on the creative side of things.

For as much as Sauk Zaentz was hated in the music world, he was loved in the film world.

Yeah, can't believe no one posted Fogerty's ode to the man yet.

since Zaentz sued him, Fogerty had to change the official name of the song from from 'Zantz' to 'Vantz'

One of the epic fights in classic rock.

Producers do a lot more than that. It depends. Sometimes the producer is the one with a lot of the creative vision for the film, even though he ultimately doesn't write or direct it.

A pretty big effect considering that everything that involves spending money goes through them. Even if they're not micromanagers they still end up making lots of decisions that affect what you see on screen.

Somewhere John Fogerty is smiling. He still holds a grudge - and for good reason. Even in his latest video for "Mystic Highway", John depicts a Zaentz-like man taking his money. That guy was a litigious a-hole. Fark Saul Zaentz - despite the great movies he helped produce.

And make a little movie screen in his mind while you read him the treatment.

He is the person who gets the product done, within the parameters set. If something about that isn't happening, he needs to fix it.

The thing with good management is that you notice it when it's not there. Heaven's Gate, The Last Movie and John Carter are the result of producers just letting their directors do what the hell they wanted, rather than managing what is happening. Then the director turns up with a first cut and it's like "holy shiat, this is terrible".

What the Disney guys failed to grasp about Andrew Stanton is that at Pixar he was quite heavily managed. Pixar does a lot of reviewing of work at all stages.

Count me in as holding Amadeus as near the top of the list of movies from the 20th century.  After watching many times i see it as the driest of dry comedies.  It is a comic attack on the notion of divine providence favoring the devout.

Honestly though I dislike the man, if he wasn't there, the new LOTR films never would've been made because Christopher Tolkien woulda just said "no" and that woulda been the end of that.
