There's kind of one here where we rent, but they are not at all uptight. It's not called an HOA, but a GID for General Improvement District.
They exist to do things like hiring contractors to rebuild streets for flood control, making sure the snow is cleared, etc.

From TFAHugh Janneus is also a resident and said that the American flag in Seahawks colors on Carlson's property is "fairly preposterous."He added that that version of the American flag is sacrilegious and should be "burned to a crisp."

Because nothing shows how much you love this country than committing homicide over someone flying a "fairly preposterous" flag.

Someone needs to DIAF, and it ain't the guy with the flags.

Besides, the Broncos are going to win it all, so it doesn't really matter

Pretty sure he meant the flag should be burned to a crisp, not the homeowner.

FTA:'"Superstitious, maybe. I mean, they're going to go to the Super Bowl, you know, and I want to be a part of it," said Carlson.'

How does putting up flags make him "part of it". Does he think the team owner is going to knock on his door and give him a Super Bowl ring because they wouldn't have won if it wasn't for his flag display?

You know he uses the term "we" when talking about the Seahawks. As in "We were down in the second quarter before coming back in the second half" Yeah dude, they couldn't have done it without you sitting on your ass in your livingroom yelling at the TV.

What did neighbor Jack Meoff have to say about the situation? I heard he had a feud last year with Mike Hunt. HOA board member Phil McCracken had to step in and mediate.

Isn't that what the government is supposed to be for?

Benevolent Misanthrope:

I've heard others say that, and to be fair I have lived the bulk of my life in rural southwestern Pennsylvania where such things are vanishingly rare.  If it's unavoidable in some areas, well that sucks but it is what it is.  Here, there is technically a code enforcement guy from the township, but that's really only ever used for egregious safety problems, never heard of anyone being fined for having disabled cars on their property or not cutting the grass on time.  Plus I know the guy, so there's that.

4 USC § 8

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

Except it's not an American flag, it's just a flag which resembles the American flag.

Also, breaking the flag code has no penalties (outside of government/military). It's a meaningless law.

President of an HOA here.

Long story short, we're a small neighborhood and we collect dues to pay for insurance, landscaping, power, and emergency stuff (like damage that happened in storms)

We have our problems, like the mentally ill woman who won't pay her dues, but for the most part, I'm pretty hands-off.  The by-laws haven't been updated in years, so even though it says "NO SATELLITE DISHES" I look the other way as long as it's not awful.  If the installation is done in a shiatty way, then I step in.

Here's my advice: Before you buy in a community with an HOA, demand from the Real Estate agent to see the bylaws and the minutes from the last meeting.  You can tell a ton about a community from reviewing those two things.

He comes from a long line of Hugh Janneuses.

I'm gonna call an all around fail for every one involved. I'm no "It's a flag not a rag!" type, but I'm still calling Old Glory defaced and recolored with private logos a vexillogical foul. (Although maybe corporate logos on the American flags would actually be more honest). The opposing team gets a foul for being an HOA and acting like an HOA.

Around here if people put up tacky and gawdy sports shiat,  then we do the normal thing.     We set things on fire with gas,  pour used motor oil all over it.    Leave road killed deer on the porch, often.     Break out their windows, run over the mail box, pour roundup on the lawn....

...until the douche finally takes down the tacky shiat and starts to conform to the norms of the area.

why is that so hard to figure out?
