Also, the lowest-ranked competitor still in the competition is Macclesfield Town. The team is right on the edge of being broke, but if they somehow pull off a win today, it might keep them afloat for a little while longer. A win today against Sheffield Wednesday will help them meet their payroll through the end of next month.

It's always the way that Arsenal get to play Spurs right as Spurs' fortunes begin to slightly improve. Usually previous form doesn't matter in games like this, but it's always nice to know that in the run up to a game you have an edge over your opponent.

Tottenham has a bunch of injuries, so that might affect them a bit. Let's see if Arsenal's defense can handle and in-form Adebayor and Townsend's speed now that he's back. With all three of Arsenal's strikers out, who will play up top?

Walcott and Podolski should be available, so my guess is Podolski up front.

Not seeing it. The CL should be awarded based on long term performance. Teams have fluked cup wins for a long time, yet proven when it comes to the weekly grind, they've got nothing. Keep it Europa League. For example, Birmingham and Wigan.

I'm fairly sure that CL qualification is defined by UEFA* rather than national bodies/leagues.
That isn't me saying I'm against the idea, just that it is probably not practical.

* 2.04 on pg. 2 gives it as 'sporting merit':  http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Download/Regulations/competitions / Regulations/01/63/02/44/1630244_DOWNLOAD.pdf which could be interpreted as allowing it, but 2.01 specifically sez league position.

That's the first thing I thought of. Wigan would have in been in the CL - Wigan, who didn't do shiat with their Europa League spot this year. But that would have meant a lot of dirty CL money for the club who went down.

However, there's been a lot of comments this week now that the big boys dropped in the competition that it's not as illustrious as it used to be. Maybe the push for the 4th spot would force Prem League sides field full teams. Man City made 7 changes to today's team, for example.

But I also realize the majority of Farkers follow EPL clubs which every year have a realistic shot at breaking the top four, so I doubt there will be much love for that idea.

Isn't he most effective as a winger, though? It seems that both Podolski and Walcott aren't particularly effective in the middle, but both are dangerous cutting in from wide.

The reason they go to the Europa League is because that cup stepped in the vacuum created by the dissolving of the Cup Winners Cup. The CL's been expanded enough as it is, since it used to be pretty much champions-only. Give the small countries a chance to get a representative in. You never know when the next APOEL might happen.

The problem is that the very top teams are going for the CL money so don't want or need the extra games and play the reserves, the teams at the bottom want to cling on to the Premier League like grim death for the money so throw everything into the league and the FA cup can hang, the only teams that can spare the reseources for a cup run are those mid table sides who can't make the CL spots but a day out at Wembly is a succesful season.

The way to get teams interested in a FA Cup run is money. if the winner gets £20 or £30 million then the accountants will make the managers play strong teams. For an example £30million will almost wipe out Chelsea's debt from last season for not making the knock out rounds of the CL

"You're different now you've played for England. You're better than this" != "You've played for England and now you think you're Bertie Big Bollocks".

I think it should be in a ref's remit to control behaviour as he sees it and as long as he's not resorting to name calling, violent behaviour or bias towards a team / towards an "even game".

I can see why they'd be annoyed, but trying to dismiss a referee entirely from all their matches just because he made a sharp comment in a game to one player seems a bit much.

Well, we don't show the game and we allow both home and away fans in - so basically we get slammed for a few hours before and after the game whilst every douche bag from Tottenham and West London and the home counties (Arsenal fans don't actually live in north london) screams for '6 pints 'a lager!'. That and there's the potential for violence... but we've managed to avoid that thus far.

Then Crossbar denies him a hat trick on a penalty.

It's one of 4 postponements today, all for waterlogged pitches. That includes a long delayed 2nd round replay.

Also, just read that Tim Sherwood will be the 10th different Spurs manager that Wenger has faced while he's been at Arsenal.

I'm surprised it's only 10.

As for Charlton, it wasn't that long ago they were an EPL side. You would think they would/could afford to have decent drainage.

Was that the cricket thing?  I saw that video and, while I didnt have a clue what was going on, it made me very happy for some reason.

2014-01-04 01:29:51 PM
Morgan called the English cricket team a bunch of girls after being roughed up by the bowling of Mitchel Johnson (Australian fast bowler). Brett Lee (an Australian cricketer bowler mostly retired) called him out and said he Morgan new sweet F.A. of what it was like to be at the reciving end of 90+ mph hostile bowling and to face him for an over.

So in the morning before a game in the last test Morgan faced Brett Lee (who at his prime was a 90+ mph) for six balls.

Morgan ended up battered, bruised and a broken rib

Video (thats basically a slightly smaller base ball being bounced into his ribs at around 85mph)

Back when they still had the EPL rights Fox would occasionally show a very high-profile match on broadcast, sometimes a repeat from an earlier live broadcast on (what was then) FSC. But it was not a regular occurrence.

Maybe also related to the fact that NBC has football today and Fox doesn't, so trying to capture some sports viewers today?

And the Bundesliga, the only European league that had any chance of having parity close to England, is down to just Bayern Munich. Lewandoski signed, he's out at BVB. Don't these other leagues look at the TV ratings for EPL and realize they can't be a two-team dog and pony show?

I really am surprised.  When one team vacuums up all the talent, it kills the league.

My headline, I mainly was talking about matchups. If Liverpool were facing Man United (or Everton) today, and Arsenal had been playing Preston North End yesterday, I'd have called the Liverpool one as the game to watch. I mainly was looking at matchups with more Premier League teams facing each other or teams from the Championship. I should have mentioned United because they're facing Swansea, but Liverpool is facing Oldham Athletic and Chelsea is facing Derby County. Both sides will be putting out secondary squads and lots of youth players today to keep the starters fresh.

Liverpool, in the 4th round last year. We're trying to avoid it being two years in a row.

For a change that's actually an even-sided draw. No fixtures that look like they're purpose-picked. Highlights are Martin Allen's cardigan, and a potential Bristol vs Manchester double fixture for Round 4. Provided we beat Watford, and also  provided Rovers beat Crawley and then Birmingham in the next week or two.

And Sam Allardyce just pulled a verbal Budd Dwyer.

He is, so I guess this is a good time as any to get some playing time in. To be honest, I'm thinking this is the beginning of the end for Stevie, we need some younger legs where he plays. He needs to train up Hendo to be him.

Rooney is a striker by trade, he won't go for being a deep playmaker.

Rationally I know you guys are right. It just frustrates me that Utd are so effective when he does that, directing traffic and passing it around, always with the threat to run at defenders, with RvP up top and a poacher like Chicharito or Welbeck in behind him.

Yeah. The script for this one practically writes itself:

- Mistake from Evans gifts Swansea an early goal
- Utd huff and puff for an hour but it's all too slow and laborious through the middle
- Welbeck and Hernandez play in the same space, both hoping to pick up rebounds from each other that never come
- Moyes throws everything at the wall in the last 15 minutes, but nothing comes of it and Utd limp out 0-1

Too pessimistic?

Sakho was off vs Chelsea, Agger off today, Kelly Off today, Enrique's been off, Flanagan was off vs City(?), Johnson is off, and Wisdom is on loan to Derby. It's not looking good. By my estimate we've got Skrtel, Toure, Cissokho, and Ilori. That's our defense at the moment.
