NeoAnderthal: Leave it to obama to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

There was never a prospect of real victory.  Sure, Saddam was deposed, so from a technical standpoint, hey, a point for us.  But Iraq was doomed to be a quagmire from the beginning.  The only potential glimmer of hope would have been splitting Iraq into 3 countries, but that would have brought its own problems.

Bush started this failure.  There is nothing Obama could have done to salvage it.

Funny thing about all those assholes is how today they go on and on about not trusting the government, and how Obama is evil and a liar, but they swallowed every lie Bush & Cheney fed them and hungrily asked if they could gobble some more.

Dumb human beings, essentially.

I noticed that behavior immediately after 9/11 as well.  The same people bad mouthing the government during Clinton's administration had completely abandoned skepticism when Bush/Cheney took over.

For many Republicans it is as simple as;
GOP president, government = good.
Dem president, government = bad.

was a spillover from the civil war in neighboring Syria -- and that the border between Syria and Iraq has now become meaningless.
The United States rejected suggestions that American troops could help stabilize the situation.
"If we couldn't control that border with 150,000 troops in that country during the war, what would a few hundred accomplish?" one U.S. official said.

I'm sorry. why am I supposed to be outraged again?

Good luck with it.

Maybe we need a Foreign legion of 'marekin patriots who can take their AK-47s and go to Iraq and fight.  They can be all bootstrappy and pay their own way.  Hell, we can pay their way there and they can find their way back.

2001-2009: Everything, no matter when it started, is Bush's fault!

2009-Present: Nothing, no matter when it started, is Obama's fault!

The troop surge, which Obama was opposed to, allowed us to implement the 'end of the war' policy that Obama tries to take credit for, but now that things are coming undone, it's back to being Bush's fault again?

It's an interesting world liberals live in. Even after 5 years of having their guy in charge, nothing that happens is ever... EVER... his fault. It's always the last guy when things go wrong, and the current guy when things go right. This is not unlike the military that delivered a crushing defeat to the Iraqi military being "Clinton's Army" but the military that didn't have all the equipment it needed being "Bush's Army".

Obama is going to be the president that goes down in history as being the only president who was ever solely responsible for anything good that ever happened while he was in office while never being at fault for anything that ever went wrong with anything while he was in office. It's like watching Christians find excuses as to why their god is always good no matter what happens in the world.

It's a little known fact that AL-Qaeda troops have a predetermined kill limit.  We need to send wave after wave of men at them until they reach that limit and they stop fighting.

Then the entire house of cards will fall like dominoes.  Checkmate.

This is on Iraq now and has very little to do with the U.S. having invaded. It's up to the people there to reject extremism and choose peace, and ultimately they will. Any amount or length of U.S. intervention could only give them that choice.

randomjsa: but now that things are coming undone, it's back to being Bush's fault again?

The troop withdrawal was negotiated by Bush, so yeah. Conservatives can't complain that we left Iraq too early when Bush set the date. As I said, though, it's not Obama or Bush's fault, it's Iraq's fault.

Al Qaeda these days basically means extremist Sunni militant groups with Qutbist political views, most of which pay at least lip service to the actual Al Qaeda. No, they're not Al Qaeda. But they are just as scary.

I know this is complicated, but bear with me for a sec. The reason people are blaming Bush is because he ordered the invasion and started the whole war in the first place.

I know that's a difficult concept to wrap your head around, but I think if you study it for a few hours you might be able to grasp it.

I know I'm p*ssing in the wind, but you all sound like idiots when you claim one president or another is as fault, or should take credit for any damn thing. The world is a complicated place, and our presidents have very little real power. The real problem is an idiotic American public who can't comprehend anything deeper than the plot of professional wrestling story lines.
A pox on all your houses! Our cluster fark of a government is YOUR fault.

You can't "save" a country that doesn't want to be saved. All the lies during the Bush era has scarred Iraq beyond any sort of repair. As much as it sucks for the people living there, they need a civil war. The differences aren't like Republican/Democrats, it's more like fire/ice; they cannot co-exist. I don't blame Bush in total, although, I do think he used the lies to get revenge for his father.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb are still getting support from the Saudi Wahhabis, although AQIM these days has to largely fund themselves by undertaking kidnapping operations.  The Somali cells still operate under the Al-Shabaab banner, and they haven't seen nearly as much personnel turnover due to sudden kinetic energy intoxication.

But an effective de-centralized NGO does that - it morphs based on changes in its geo-political environment.  And the Bush Administration did far more damage to the global effort to eliminate AQ cells  than any other entity, when they backed off Afghanistan and ginned up flimsy excuses to satisfy a neo-conservative fantasy and invade Iraq.

gadian: Saddam was about the best thing that could've happened to that place.  Some places need dictators.

I've been saying that for years. Taking down Saddam was a misteak. He was not a good man, but he was the right man in the right place, and he was able to keep the wildly disparate parts of Iraq together. A three-country solution would just be suicide, their neighbours would just invade - kind of like TFA.

He (Bush) has now convinced himself that "history will be kind to him." It's just us the present who don't get it. He's the Van Gogh is presidents, you know, not appreciated in this lifetime . . . . I swear to God, a couple of weeks ago he was defending his legacy and he said, "they're still debatin' our first president." No, they're not. Who's debating whether George Washington was a good president? He's on the one dollar bill. He's on Mount Rushmore. They named the capitol after him. I think the jury is in one this guy, I do. His nickname is, "Father of the Country." That's about as Kim Jong Il as we're going to get in this country, I hope. -- Bill Maher.

Iraqi problems. Also, if Maliki stops being such a dick and shares a little power with Sunni politicians, he can easily bribe the western tribes into cooperating with the Iraqi army and security forces to kill all those Al Qaeda assholes and kick them out of Fallujah, same way the U.S. did in 2007. This is no more of a big deal than when the Taliban overran some Pakistani cities a few years ago, before being booted back to the boonies by the Pakistani Army.
