Yeah. Rather than hire a real GM, Let's dilute the playoffs even more than we did when we added divisions.

There's 32 teams now. If you're going to dilute, dilute completely. 13 game season, all 32 teams are seeded in brackets, 5 week tournament. You get your 18 game season, you get a bunch of shiatty playoff games you can overcharge for. It'll be a lot of crap football as everyone rests starters all the time but it will max out revenue.

Meh, they'll just end up missing it by one game finishing the season 7-9 after the defense has a terrible week 17, Romo leads them back in the 2nd half, but throws a pick 6 on the final drive to seal the game.

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys.
Don't let 'em wear silver or ugly blue stars,
Let 'em be Redskins and Niners and Cards.

Nope. As it stands right now we have just the right amount of teams to create unusual, wild-and-crazy scenarios that keep people interested all the way to the end of the season. Even though my favorite team would make it almost every single season with an expansion I would prefer to keep it as it is, give teams a reason to fight until the end.

Only if those first-week games feature three teams playing at the same time on the same field

FTA: "Dallas would not have qualified for the playoffs the last four seasons even if they were expanded to include an additional two teams per conference. "

Jones is not about winning.  He's about money.   More playoff TV would be easy money, and not much effort  to make happen.

He also flat-out said he's on the side of creating more revenue.

Jerruh isn't a bad owner, and he's a good marketer. It's as a GM that he's comparable to dead rhinocerous asshole.

I don't know why a Cowboys fan would be so upset about there being a bunch of Cowboys threads. I'm a Patriots fan, and I would love if there were more Patriots threads. You should be happy that you get so many opportunities to talk about your favorite team with other football fans. What are either of us going to talk about in a Raiders thread?

On the other hand, he got upset that when I said that Orton played like Romo last week. Which is actually factual when you look at the statistics, and the trends over the course of the game. If anything Orton actually played better as he had more yards and one more TD than romo in his game against the Redskins the year before, but had same amount of INTs at the critical time.

Makes sense to me. I always thought of having 8 teams in each conference for the playoffs. The NBA and NHL don't have bye weeks for the top teams and normally they do well without the rest. I would find it more interesting overall because it keeps everybody on its toes every week.

Just get rid of divisions, you play every one in your conference once and play two different teams in the other conference one home and one away and take the top 8 from each conference like NBA. The next year you swap the home and away. Sure some teams will cry foul but you'll only be unbalanced by the two teams you randomly play in the other conference.

Trey, I'm surprised anyone still pays. I quit TF a couple of years ago when I realized the site liked having the trolls for click-driving. Politics is always going to be heated, and the site is about being snarky, but when every thread about something as simple as space exploration yields an adult toddler flinging his poop everywhere, it's not worth it.

I keep coming back for the Sports Tab regulars, though. I have way too much fun with you guys.

it has gotten to a point that you cannot comment on a performance without it being taken as an attack rather than proper criticism/commentary.

I admit i posted pics of orton and romo making fun of them, the comment on orton playing just like romo, while cheeky, was valid commentary given the context (two do or die game 17s that were almost mirror match, including how they ended) .

and that is why Di Atribe has me blocked. She takes it all personally when you talk about the suckage that just happened authored by Romo and Company.

You know it is like everything else, when your referred to as "America's Team" and your fans are such blind loyalists, you open yourself up to the ridicule. I cannot remember anyone who said anything like that that didn't get lambasted (bigger than god, jesus...that kind of thing...)

FTA: "From the standpoint of looking at how exciting it is for a city or a community to be involved in the playoffs and the fact that you can have a team that might have literally operated at .500 or in that area ... you can have that team win the Super Bowl," Jones said Friday

I wonder what .500 teams could he be referring to.   But as for the Dallas choking thing, it seems like we're talking about something that is the result of a small sample size.  I love the NFL and have no wish to see the regular or post-season expand, but it's foolish to suggest that in 18-19 games (counting post-season) it is actually possible to figure out the team that has the best chance of winning over the rest of the league.  We seem to be moving more towards a focus on individual achievements within the game, celebrating Manning's record season this year or AP's last year, with Fantasy playing a huge role.  It's an approach that dare I say it is... Baseball like.  I might root for the Yankees, but I can acknowledge the feats of Williams, Yaz, and the like.  In other words, we're paying attention to the gears in the clock, not what time it is.

Here's the better idea:  (1) stop awarding wild card playoff berths based on conference, (2) eliminate the preferential seeding given to division champions over other qualifiers, and (3) stop seeding by conference, doing it league-wide.  This year, your format for the first two rounds would look something like this...

In:  Arizona Cardinals, who finished 10-6-0 this year but had the misfortune of finishing 3rd in the NFC West.
Out:  Green Bay Packers, who finished 8-7-1 this year, but won the NFC North Division title and with it, an automatic playoff berth.

San Diego Chargers at San Francisco 49ers
Philadelphia Eagles at Cincinnati Bengals
Arizona Cardinals at Indianapolis Colts
New Orleans Saints at Kansas City Chiefs

highest winning seed at #4 New England Patriots
second-highest winning seed at #3 Carolina Panthers
second-lowest winning seed at #2 Seattle Seahawks
lowest winning seed at #1 Denver Broncos

from there, the highest winning seeds get to host semi-final games, going on to the Super Bowl from there.

This not only eliminates at least to an extent the rewards given to a lame divisional champ (Packers this year, the 7-9-0 Seattle Seahawks a few years ago) and rewards the best teams without regard to geography, but it also opens up the possibility of currently impossible Super Bowl matchups (imagine, for instance, a Manning v. Brady, New England vs. Denver Super Bowl played in New York City).

I actually want two more teams. I think there's enough college talent for it and it would make veterans more valuable. Right now most teams have an average roster age of like 26

The NFL has already allowed losing teams to enter the playoffs as it is. Expanding the post-season further is a stupid idea. Only contenders, not pretenders, should advance.
