xaks: FriarReb98: Meanwhile, it will be a nice cozy 25 or so at the Linc Saturday night, and a balmy 40 at Cincy on Sunday.  And Indy will be indoors and Jim Irsay's mocking all the cold weather shiat.

Naw. He'll be biatching at people on twitter. "Don't like the weather? Go buy a planet and run it how you like!"  Even though, of course, he inherited his, along with all his money.

That's someone I'd love to see go on a three-day bender and wake up in Baltimore.

The NFL is encouraging fans to sit outside in weather classified as life threatening this Sunday for the remainder of the playoffs.

Guess you forgot all about where they are playing the Super Bowl, not to mention each playoff game not being played in a dome or in a warm weather city.

I look at it this way.  I love me some football as well as the next guy.  But why would you willingly pay inflated ticket prices to:  a) have your view obstructed, b) be so far away from the action that a 350 pound offensive lineman looks like an ant with shoulder pads on, c) develop frostbite?  Me, even if I were given tickets to any such a game, I would be found holed up in my man cave watching the action on my 60" HD set.

Snuffybud: Back in the day when Jim Kelly led the Bills to 4 straight Super Bowls I was a a couple of real cold one, but never as cold as -5°. I went and looked up the numbers:

On 12/26/93 the Bills beat the Jets 16-14 in their final home game of the season. It was 9° at kickoff, the windchill was a comfy -12°.We were allowed to bring insulated plastic mugs into the stadium back then, my beer was freezing solid inside my mug.

Three weeks later the Bills beat the Raiders 29-23 to advance in the playoffs. In the time between the games I went out and bought a set of boots rated to -80°, as my old boots didn't do the trick when I was standing on concrete and snow and not moving much. It was 3° at kickoff that day, with a windchill of -14°. I thought it wasn't too bad while we were standing around the fire tailgating, then we headed into the stadium....

/4th Super Bowl loss that season.
//I still hate the farking Cowboys

I went to that raiders game and we made it to half time  (I was 10 and the oldest of the children so we left for good reason)  I just don't get the cowboys hate.  They were clearly the better team.  I neither hate nor like the cowboys  I just enjoy laughing at romo's mistakes.  (and I'm one who thinks he gets unfairly criticized.)

I still hate the Giants and the Redskins too, it's one of those things you don't ever forget. I always love my fish squishings, and I sure as hell hope the Bills get good enough to whack Brady and Belichick ass's a few times before they retire.

As bad as the temp is, I'd be there at Lambeau on Sunday in a heartbeat if circumstances allowed.

But, both my truck and the Mrs. Xaks' car need tires, and my grill's last leg, long ago broken and held up by force of will alone for several months, is  about to let go.

So, no way I can get there.

I mean, yea, 1700ish miles away kinda makes it tough on short notice.

Although, in a somewhat ironic twist, the LAST time I was at Lambeau was the '96 playoffs against Carolina (in early '97). My beer froze. I mean, you know its cold outside when your beer freezes.

It's going to be cold, no question but going to the game just makes sense.  The reasons for poor ticket sales this game are valid but it also created an opportunity for non-season ticket holders to go to playoff game at face value which I couldn't pass up.  I am shocked to be Weenerser on this thread who is actually going to the game. I grapped tickets on Thursday and made a few strategic purchases today to complete my wardrobe.  It will be sad if the Packers lose the game but the chance of the third time being the charm is too rich to pass up.

Benevolent Misanthrope: "Temperatures will be in the single digits and dropping when the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers kick off Sunday afternoon.

Really?  Because, living here in Northern Canada, I have gear for temperatures much colder than that.  Normal winter coats here are rated to -45 or so.  This may be my chance to get playoff tickets for cheap!  Of course, it'd be damned expensive to get there...

Speaking for myself, coats isn't the issue. My torso/legs don't get cold; it's my feet and hands.

5o in north jersey right now. My gas boiler is going to burn a hole in itself. Hate, hate hate this shiat. If the splendid owl is played in this weather it will be funny to see all the empty seats, vacated by corporate shills who would rather watch from the warm comfort of the bar, while the 2,000 Seahawks and 5,000 Denver fans enjoy the game.

TFA was written by someone in SF, where they start biatching if it drops below 55F. Man I wish I were there right now.

It's going to be well below -5, most likely. And you go to cfl games that cold? Aren't those games done by mid November? fark that shiat. And I thought I was being dumb by staying in Minnesota. Guess it could be worse.

I'm not sure that the under-field heaters at Lambeau will be able to keep up with those temps. I'm originally from extreme Northern Wisconsin, and even *I* think that's just a tad cold to be playing a football game (and forcing people to sit on metal bleachers, not regular seating like every other stadium, for 4-6 hours, to watch).

To be fair, putting your bare arse on the bleachers with nothing in between is not at all recommended by the club, or by anybody at all really. Many other options exist.

BKITU: ariseatex: Are the press boxes heated at Lambeau?  Just thinking that it's the only game this weekend on Fox, which means Buck & Aikman will be there...

If Joe Buck is hypothermic and sluggish... would it make a difference?

I have a soft spot for Buck and Aikman because they did every one of the Packers playoff games in the 2010 Superbowl run. Even before that I never really understood the common Packer fan theme that Aikman has it out for the Packers. He isn't the brightest guy around, but he's not malicious.

Amen.  I grabbed some huge work boots and a Neoprene face mask and layers will be key.  My wife wants me to get ski google style eye protection but I think thats taking things to far.  My current plan for gear is:

Feet: 3 pairs of socks, Large work boots.
Legs: Normal boxer-briefs, long underwear, jeans + sweat pants on top.
Torso:Tee shirt, long underwear, possibly another long sleave shirt, hoodie, winter coat.
Head: Face mask, scarf + Hat
Hands: Fingerless Gloves + thick winter gloves.
For the cherry on top I'll be rocking a Mexican style Packers Poncho.  25 articles of clothing combined with booze and hand warmers should be sufficient.

If I may offer a suggestion (as someone who spent many years doing ice rescue -- including 4 years in your neck of the woods): Keep any wool or cotton off the skin.  First layer needs to be a wicking layer.  We used polypropylene, but I think there are better fabrics available.  This is especially true of the socks and shirt.  After that, go nuts with wool or cotton.  But if you don't have something that wicks away perspiration, it could be uncomfortable in those temps.

At any rate - good luck!
