Do it for FOOTBALL!

It's your patriotic duty.

The NFL has ignored studies which link sitting outside in extremely cold temperatures to numbness, frostbite, and death.

The NFL has done its own studies which find NO link at all between drinking beer in a parking lot for 3 hours and dehydration or drunkenness.

"Temperatures will be in the single digits and dropping when the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers kick off Sunday afternoon.

Really?  Because, living here in Northern Canada, I have gear for temperatures much colder than that.  Normal winter coats here are rated to -45 or so.  This may be my chance to get playoff tickets for cheap!  Of course, it'd be damned expensive to get there...

Just looked on the secondary market, and you can get 50 yard line seats in the first 25 rows for $175.  What a deal, if you have the gear for it...

I think what a lot of people are missing out on here is that if that game doesn't sell out, the NFL (see: same assholes who sue churches for throwing Super Bowl watch parties as fund raisers to feed the poor) will black out the game locally. That means kids who idolize these athletes, seniors who can't brave the cold, etc., won't be able to see the game. Is it just a game? Of course, but football in Green Bay is religion. There's no chance in hell I'd take my kids to a game in that weather.

I remember hearing someone describe the Ice bowl. Many people were wearing sleeping bags and kept their beer bottles inside the bag so it didn't freeze. People were holding it so long that you could hear screams coming from the Men's room.

I remember a Raiders game that Microsoft bought a bunch of tickets for just to make sure it wasn't blacked out. They had some commercial time for something they were releasing and wanted to make sure it got aired. I foresee something like that happening. And I thought black-out rules were different for play off games.

2014-01-03 06:14:50 PM
Nah, it isn't dangerous. You just need to imbibe plenty of liquids that act as a vasodilator (for $12 a pop) so you don't feel the cold. Problem solved!

Not sure on the playoff blackout rules. I live in Louisville and I'm a Bengals fan. I was thinking about driving up for the game but we're supposed to get -20F on Sunday with the wind chill. F*ck that. And I saw the NFL was threatening to blackout Cincy because - shocker here - it's hard to get 70,000 people to want to sit in that weather. Kroger swooped in and bought up all the remaining seats so I guess problem solved, but the NFL are still megadickwads.

I'm a Louisville football season ticket holder, and I'm usually the guy yelling at people to not leave before the game's over, brave the weather, etc. But -30F is just farking dangerous, man. Forget that, even for Green Bay.

There's another article on it over in the total fark cue about it. NFL has shortened the blackout cut off to 48 hours before the game instead of the usual 72. I'm thinking this is the last year of that rule.

Was reading that Wind Chill may play this game at -53 deg F. That'd be enough to cause injury.

There's a point where the NFL or possibly OSHA cancels the game due to elements, right?

But they had no problem delaying the first game of the season....

Finally, icing the kicker may actually work.

The NFL is a cartel and demands constant payment. Your lives are not of their concern.

2014-01-03 06:46:10 PM
Ha, I get cold even watching the games at home (and I'm in the south). My hands and feet are freezing right now!

2014-01-03 06:47:25 PM
farking hell am I glad I came back down south.  Worst I ever dealt with was something like 5F in DC.  Wind tunnel in the Metro probably made it about -10 with wind chill, but walking made it bearable for the 5 minutes it took to get to my building.

Sitting outside at a football game for four hours in worse than that is wrong.

I would imagine emergency services would put a stop to the event, yes.

The ice bowl was so cold, the first referee's whistle froze to his lips (they used metal whistles back then). From then on, no whistles were blown and all plays were stopped with hand signals and shouting.

/they use plastic fox40 whistles now

It won't get that cold in Cincy until the middle of the night Sunday.  Right now, Weather Channel hourly has 36 feel like 29 at 1PM and 26 feel like 15 at 6PM, though there could be several inches of snow during the game.

It was so cold that one player began to sweat and was gravely injured when the resulting icicles pierced his heart. He gave the thumbs up when they were working on him on the field, and he was still giving it when they carried him off. Because it had frozen in that position (he was already dead). To the ice bowl!

Kroger did that for the Bengals game this week.

As someone who grew up in Saskatchewan I am getting a kick out of the "life threatening weather".....nobody ever used to say a word about - 40C, they just dealt with it.....when did everyone become whiny little pussies about the f*cking weather?

/dry cold that -40   :D
//Mt. Rhuapehu New Zealand, minus 1 C, 100% humidity, 60 knot wind, that is life threatening....

Neat. I predict a death on the field during this game

The only saving grace with that is that the advisory doesn't kick in until late sunday night. Though it's not like forcasts are always accurate down to the hour

FWIW, the Packers have said they will be providing free handwarmers and hot drinks.

I propose a forced halftime walk.  Everyone gets up and walks around the bowl until their back where they started.

This could be the quietest NFL game ever. Between all the layered clothing and face protection, they'll barely make a sound.

The advisory starts Sat night and becomes a warning Sun night. The game should last until ~8pm Sunday night.

Honestly the NFL should move this to Saturday or they're risking a lot of lawsuits from fans/employees/NFLPA. They cannot claim ignorance here.

You'll be a ble to hear the kicker scream in agony when bones in his foot shatter as he attempts the game-winning FG.

If you move it, it'd have to be postponed. The logistics of moving it up this quickly would be tough to pull off.

I have a feeling the NFL is going to have to waive the blackout rule as someof the games arenot going to dell out unless someone steps up and buys the unsold tickets.

By that I mean , one person or organization step up and buys all the remaining tickets.   and that very well may not happen.

Postponing is worse considering the weather stays bad until Tuesday. It'd have to go earlier. Granted at this point their best bet might be finding a dome to play in.

Feels like there's something missing here. That or the NFL is gambling that the weather improves.

Already happened.  Mainly corporations.  I know Kroger bought a big chunk for its hometown of Cincy.

Bones, nothing. The blood, ligaments, tendons, and muscles will also be frozen solid. I fully expect lower extremities to explode into shards, like a frozen steak dropped onto concrete from 20 meters high.

I'm as big a fan of cold, snowy, windy, muddy games as anyone, but this does seem like a bad idea for oh so many reasons.
