(The Believer Magazine)   People assume that Nancy Kerrigan was a strict progression of victimization to self-pitying mewling, but actually, from a nonlinear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbily wobbly, timey "why me"...stuff   (believermag.com) divider line 89

Interesting article. I take issue with some of it, but it's a good read.

She once hit a guy in a trailer park with a hubcap.  That's not doing much to upgrade your image, Tonya.

It's simple. Tonya Harding   'Murica!

It's odd that I remember the night of the Kerrigan attack. I met a girl named Emma and she was lovely. A year later not so much lovely left.

Scrolling to the end I found out it is actually part of a book the article writer wrote on women in media. So this is just a very long-winded plug for her book.

I agree.  It's like some half-assed remembrance of the event that imagines a world where Tonya Harding isn't insecure enough to try to cripple the competition.  Seriously, the whole article falls apart when you realize that the only reason people remember Nancy Kerrigan is because of this.

The faux academic angle just makes it cloying and revisionist.  We're not talking about women's images in the media in this case.  Tonya Harding isn't some misunderstood person with too much ambition.  She's an insecure and short-sighted jackass who ruined her short career by assaulting her competition.  Period.  There's not much here to really delve into.

That said, looking back at it twenty years later makes me realize just how pathetic the whole thing really was.  Even if Kerrigan wasn't attacked, they would still be where they're at.  Nothing really changed for them at all.

I think she began with and then lost the more interesting angle of the article - which is why we choose to remember Kerrigan saying "why me" instead of "why." (Reminds me of when I first heard the throwaway Family Guy joke "...that pretty dark haired figure skater with the horse teeth, you know the one who got what she had coming"and wondered "when did we decide we hated her?").

She came back to it at the end...but about 1500 words too late.

I like Tonya.  She races the fasted stock-bodied model T in the world.  Here's a shot I snuck in 2011 at Bonneville:

It's talking about the narratives that media construct around people, even if they have to saw off minor limbs in the process. Also, the mutability of the narratives, given how Harding was portrayed in 1992 compared to 1994. Kerrigan was also subject to this shoehorning process.

I remember feeling disappointed that Harding was part of such a ridiculous scandal. She had the talent, but her upbringing and auxiliaries failed her. She really did bootstrap herself up to national competitions through personal drive and skill, but none of that helps when there's money to be made off of your downfall. The article is pretty spot-on with how the "white trash" narrative went down. And Giloolly's actions just fit right into that narrative like a key into a lock. It doesn't help that Harding wasn't terribly bright, as mentioned above. She was an athlete, and could pull off a triple axel, but couldn't figure out how to right her life.

Anyway, not condoning anything she did, but Tonya Harding wasn't a monster. The people around her were. Her mother, her half-brother, her abusive husband and his dumbass friends. It's an interesting "what-if" to imagine a 1994 Olympics without the scandal and just Harding and Kerrigan going toe-to-toe with just talent to make the difference. Oksana Baiul might have been crying about her fourth-place finish.
