Seen people pull up to the local  food bank in nicer cars than that.   It's a strange kind of affluent poverty, but I see it a lot here in Loudoun county.  A change in circumstances leaves someone with the outwards trappings of wealth, even though they are now grindingly poor.  The fact that you could afford something nice before you lost you job  doesn't mean afterwards you aren't busted broke and that Lexus is just your car (you likely leased and are nervously waiting for the day they repo it and you have no car) and your only way to get the food aid you need to keep your family from going hungry

A lot of food banks aren't direct service providers. I.e., they actually serve partner agencies who then dole out food to individuals. Loudoun County is big, so I'd imagine this is the case for them (could be wrong).

That Lexus probably belongs to a local pastor.

More serious... wealthy family hits hard times...

... one of last things you'd sell is the car. You need a car to get to work in most places in US with little to no public transportation.

Yeah... probably not really poor... but you never know.

I've been poor a very long time and, humiliatingly, I've had to go to food closets. The Catholics are the only ones that can be counted on having one available so I went to them. They are very nice and will rarely, if ever, deny anyone food. That's why you see the worst scumbags on Earth show up who know this Catholic attribute and exploit it. The first kind of asshat you see is the morbidly obese woman who is taking items like cakes, cookies and candy. She obviously doesn't need to beg for food, and she's taking fattening stuff that's meant as treats for kids. Every time I went, a good quarter of the line standers were these women ( of all races, in fact most were white ).

Far worse than the fatty in the food line, though, are the rich. Yes, the wealthy, the 1%ers, the upscale afficienados of fine expensive liquor and exclusive neighborhoods. They also beg at the same Catholic church. I have seen Mercedes, BMWs, Cadillac Escalades and even a damned Porsche pull up on the street near the food bank. I watched one guy wearing regular jeans, shirt, jacket combo pretend to be homeless to get extra, then load it all up in a shiny new SUV. Here's well-to-do asshats that scream about taxes and the horrors of moochers lying to obtain food meant for the truly destitute and hungry children.

It takes a special kind of asshat to do crap like that, and I went off; I lost my shiz and cussed that scumbag out at volume levels that made the Pope jump in Rome. I couldn't take it. Someone had to say something. It made me feel better and few others threw some, "Yeahs!" my way, but no justice was done. I saw that same asshat a few months later. Flipped him off then too.

How could they afford food after buying a $50,000 vehicle?

I used to be an exterminator and I serviced some Section 8 apartments. It never ceased to amaze me that there would be Miatas, Lexuses, and expensive sports cars in the parking lot, $5000 worth of living room furniture/electronics (courtesy of Rent-a-Center), but the bedrooms would have mattresses on the floor, milk crates as a dresser and no food in the kitchen.

To be fair, not all BMWs are luxury cars anymore.  The new BMW 320 series sedans have been rolled out to reach down-market and compete with Honda Accords.  The brand jumped the shark when they phased on the e46 series and replaced them with the bloated e9x chassis 3 series.  It's not at all surprising that the food bank crowd have started driving them.

It's just like the story that every single Fark Independent Tosspot has. Each one swears to have either personally seen or knows someone IRL who has seen a black woman in a fur coat step out of a Cadillac then buy something with food stamps.

Every one. It's like there's a plague of this completely real and not at all ugly or racist stereotype everywhere complete and utter wankers look and no one else.

Drug dealers and pimps don't report their income.  While most people getting government aid are probably on the up and up, there is probably a sizable minority that have incomes that they don't report, either because it is from something illegal, or because they are in a legal business that deals with a lot of cash transactions that they can hide.  I don't know how to fix the problem without also hurting people who are not taking advantage, but I am open to ideas.

If you're a government official running a gift card food voucher giveaway, you should probably institute some rules as to who's eligible, rather than first come, first serve.

In SC there are probably more luxury cars parked in trailer Parks than outside nicer homes.

It's not so much that they have extra income, its they poorly budget the income they have. They will spend the money on cars and living room/entertainment goods because that is what people see. It's a lot about keeping up the appearance they have a lot of money, so the proportions are off. Likely, their combined budget for health care, retirement, and kids college is 0%.

Pointing out that they were East Asian implies that this was likely a misunderstanding due to language, but the paper probably wanted to be vague about it so as to keep their readership more inflamed.

They got a two-fer on their hands with this story and they're not going to waste it.

Something like that happened to one of my mom's friends many years ago.  She owned a Cadillac and rented a nice house, but she got into a high-speed car accident (not her fault) and slowly spiraled into mental illness soon after.  She lost her job and her home, but she still had her Cadillac while living in a homeless shelter.

I don't know what eventually happened to her, but the last I heard was that she had cut off most of her friends due to paranoid delusions.

I live in Toronto, I've heard about the $100 card program to replace lost food. I hadn't heard anything about it being restricted to people who "needed it".

It was set up in a hurry, and the guidelines have been poorly explained. I wouldn't really blame people.

2014-01-03 04:50:15 PM
Not to break up the judgy wudgy party here, but I read a story a few days back (was from Sept 2013) about a woman who was judged "not poor enough" to be using EBT (food stamps) at a grocery store in a "richish" part of town.

The food stamps were a result of their 28 year old fully disabled son living at home with them.

http://www.startribune.com/opinion/commentaries/223547051.html

You don't know everyone's story.  And why people are so up in arms about welfare for "poor" people, but not so up in arms about giving corporations welfare, is beyond me.  We give subsidies to corporations, and when we don't give them outright subsidies, we subsidize their profits by paying for their employees to be able to afford food or clothing or healthcare.

2014-01-03 05:01:29 PM
I got the impression from reading the article that this was disaster relief, not "welfare", and I would just like to point out that most disasters effect people equally, regardless of income.

I lived in a building that burned down a few years ago, and I got $150 from the red cross.  I wasn't broke at the time, but I needed a way to survive in the short term until I could get new ID, bank cards, etc.  I had my own money, but no way to access it immediately.

I hate it when self-entitled jerks ruin a perfectly good Porcupine/BMW joke. GET BACK IN THE CAR!

My friend, who is not wealthy by any means, drove a BMW for years.  It was a 1989 3-Series and he paid $2500 for it.

The only reason he gave it up was that it was the all-wheel-drive version of the car, and parts were stupid expensive.

2014-01-03 05:15:03 PM
Well, gee people, how the heck else do you think people can save enough money to buy a BMW?

I don't think of a Mazda MX5 (it's not called the Miata any more) as a luxury car, nor a high-end sportscar. From the Wiki: The MX-5 was unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show on February 10, 1989, with a price tag of US$14,000 (US$25,400 in 2011 adjusted for inflation).
