timswar: lowered the overall level of competition and fun in the NFL

The Redskins might be awful but the Cowboys are competitive every year. They've been .500 or better 8 out of the last 10 years and made the playoffs 4 times.

2014-01-03 01:08:33 PM

timswar: The Cowboys and the Redskins both have the same problem. Intensely hateable owners whose treatment of the team as their personal playthings has lowered the overall level of competition and fun in the NFL

If they want success, I highly recommend they follow Paul Allen's example.

/But they won't.
//Which is fine with me.

Crewmannumber6: They're still the most recognizable team, and with the league marketing internationally more and more that's important. I have family in Ireland and London and when they ask me about the NFL they always mention Dallas.I try to set them straight, but I don't know if it sinks in.

that's basically how the term "America's Team" got coined in the first place... they were one of the youngest teams in the NFL back in the 60's & 70's, yet win or lose they were the most marketable and quickly captured markets where there was no NFL/AFL team

eventually people started disliking the franchise in these expansion areas tho, i remember growing up there were a lot of 49ers fans in my area because people latched on to anybody other than the cowboys (not to mention, the two teams played eachother in the NFC championship a lot at the time)

i know the Patriots get a lot of attention overseas as well largely because of Tom Brady

It is kind of a self-fullfiling prophecy.

The team that gets all the media attention will be more recognizable and get better ratings. The team with the ratings gets more media attention. And the circle continues.

If you put a big media push on the Seahawks, within a few years they would likely be in the same boat.

That came along when I was 9 or 10 and I didn't get that it was a joke because there were people I knew that were like that.  We ate pork chops, brats, and polish sausage on the regular and we went to Ditka's restaurant (because there were multiple locations) and my Dad's business partner always wore sunglasses and a mustache with his hair-slicked back like Ditka.

I didn't get that this was something to make fun of.  I thought that everyone in the country regularly stuffed themselves with pork products.  Even the Polish waitress "jus doin' ma job" seemed normal.

Too bad Houston didn't go with "Steers" as was considered instead of "Texans".

A cool name that sets up a lot of great jokes about both teams.

Slow To Return: I wonder if there's a single person in the entire DFW area who finds it surprising that the Cowboys are both the most hated and the most loved team in the NFL?

This is the same news we've been hearing every couple of months for the past twenty years.

I wonder why anyone who knows anything about the NFL would be surprised.

The same is likely the case for the Yankees and Maple Leafs. The teams that get a lot of media attention get tons of casual fans and tons of hatred.

This was the thought that came to my mind as well.  Allen bought the team for civic pride and then left most of the running to the GM and HC.  At the time, that was Mike 'I AM THE WALRUS' Holmgren.  Now, it's Carroll and Snyder, and they are working some serious magic.

I think the survey was taken in Philly. Seriously they are going to try to say the Cowboys are less popular than Tampa Bay. The Bucs can't sell out a game and Cowboys stadium is full every week. I am sure they lost of lot of fans when they stopped winning 8 years ago but I don't see them at the bottom yet.

They have always been over hyped, but Jerry Jones really rubs people the wrong way. The only owner I hate worse is that asshole in Philly who signed Dog Killer. Michael Vick should have never played again except in a penal league.

Texas is rich in many natural resources, nerve being just one.

It wasn't the Cowboys that labeled themselves; it was NFL Films, and the league ran with it. I'm not saying the team doesn't like the free marketing, but this has always been a league-driven label.

Nobody gives a damn about the Bucs. If you asked a random person on the street to list all the NFL teams they can think of, virtually all would list the Cowboys and few would list the Bucs.

Football is popular in Dallas, so you could probably fill the stadium with non-cowboy fans. But of course, there are plenty of loacal fans. You also have plenty of casual fans around the country because they received tons of media attention over the past decades. Then you have plenty of people that hate them for the same media attention (plus people that hated them for being successful back in the day and never got over it and fans of rival teams).

Hence voted most hated and second most liked.

And when the Cowboys came into the league they had a huge portion on the country looking for a team to cheer for.

The whole state of Texas, Oklahoma, the whole southeast (not much competition from the Saints and Falcons in those days) were either Cowboys or Dolphins fans, the whole southwest...of course they would have the biggest fan base.

Nah....people hate him because he's short.

Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
Short people got no reason
To live
They got little hands
Little eyes
They walk around
Tellin' great big lies
They got little noses
And tiny little teeth
They wear platform shoes
On their nasty little feet
Well, I don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
`Round here
Short people are just the same
As you and I
(A fool such as I)
All men are brothers
Until the day they die
(It's a wonderful world)
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
Short people got nobody
To love
They got little baby legs
That stand so low
You got to pick em up
Just to say hello
They got little cars
That go beep, beep, beep
They got little voices
Goin' peep, peep, peep
They got grubby little fingers
And dirty little minds
They're gonna get you every time
Well, I don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
Don't want no short people
'Round here

Honestly, it shouldn't be. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that every team was already doing this. No other team's fans have the long and storied history of asshattery as the Iggles, though. It's probably just confirmation bias in action.

When I was living in Ohio, the bigots there looked for every reason to dismiss any QB that wasn't the complexion of sour cream.  And if there weren't any, they'd make them up.  And discussions about football players?  Always limited to the QBs, or at least how good the white ones are.  Others were only discussed as a whole.  So-and-so team has an "okay defense".  So-and-so team has a "good running game".

They will happily accept the sight of every single "big ugly hit 'em" position manned by a black dude as long as the starting QB and head coach were both white.  Blacks can be bigger, stronger, faster, but damned if they'll ever admit a black guy could be smart or hardworking.  It's 21st century racism at its finest.  (And yes, they hate basketball; it's a "thug's sport".)

I'd imagine they'd hate, hate Russell Wilson.  They don't want to see another* black QB winning the Super Bowl.  And even if the Seahawks do manage to win it all?  They'll be absolutely sure Wilson had nothing to do with it, and is the most overrated QB in NFL history.

*And no, Doug Williams never existed.

triptheory: I have lived in this city for 25 years and I have never heard anyone say that with any seriousness.

That's not surprising; if you hang around the same people all day and none of them say it, well there's your worldview for you.

I worked on a sales team; I was meeting different people each time down and it got mentioned in more power lunches than I care to count.

So the first job was with a bunch of racists in Ohio and the other was with a bunch of secessionists down in Texas.

dragonchild: The_Sponge: How the hell can 9% of the respondents have an unfavorable opinion of Russell Wilson? (Were they all Niners fans?) You can hate the Hawks, you can hate Pete Carroll, you can hate Richard Sherman.....but hating Russell Wilson?

That was pretty good.  Now can you explain the hatred for Tony Romo?

Look at his helmet and then read the headline.
