Good headline subby

And that was an awesome game.  I loved it.  Would've preferred the Wings to win, but it was a ton of fun watching it even in loss.

That said, excellent headline.

You may be late to the game, subby, but seeing as having a positive Leafs headline is a rare event, I'll take it.

Brilliant headline, subby.

That said...old news. Threadjack into USA Hockey selection discussion now that we've had a few days to read Burnside's article and process the selections?

Burnside's Article if anybody hasn't seen it.  Long, but worthwhile. Frankly, some of the best stuff to come out of ESPN on hockey in a LONG time.

For what it's worth, my take on it basically looks like this:

Forwards: I get the crap going on about Ryan being left off the team completely, but to be honest, I kind of agree with Burke on this one.  He's a good-to-great goal scorer, but he doesn't play a 60-minute game, and doesn't play particularly well defensively.  That quote from the article about rejecting Seth Jones because of a worry about a rookie lapse costing them a goal or a game?  That same thing can just as easily apply to Ryan because he was lazy for a few minutes and didn't backcheck.

Burke is a douche, and overstated the issue (being Burke) when he said that Ryan doesn't know the word "intensity", but he's kinda got a point.  Wheeler's been playing very, very hard up in Winnipeg (been paying attention to him; 2 years kept on a fantasy squad), and his scoring and Ryan's scoring aren't that far off (2G, 2A in Ryan's favor, with Wheeler being on a much worse team).

That said, I'd have preferred to see Stepan left off the team, and Ryan get that spot.  That way, you have the freedom to bench Ryan if he gets lazy.  Stepan's only there because they evidently HAD to have a 5th dedicated center; frankly, there's some people the team playing wing who I'd rather see just moved over to center instead of Stepan being there.

Defense: One big question here.  Does anybody -farking anybody- think that Faulk, Carlson, or Fowler is a better player for this team than Yandle?  Look, in the next Olympics, those three are going to be great for the US.  And yes, Yandle is prone to the occasional defensive lapse...because he playing on a farking team that requires him to be offensive to jump-start their scoring!  Team USA presumably will have better offense than Phoenix (sorry, desertgeek), and thus Yandle won't have to jump into the play as often.  QED, he's less of a defensive liability than they think, and a lot more of an offensive threat than the other three players I named.

I know people are down on Martin's selection (paired up with Orpik), but I'm OK with it, having put myself in the role of Shero and Bylsma.  They know those guys, know what they can do, and know how to make them do it.  Some small certainty is very comforting in a job like this, and while I can understand the nay-sayers, I also understand where Shero and Bylsma are coming from.

Goal: Man, I dunno.  Howard or Schneider or Bishop?  Howard with the experience, but the other two are currently having a better season.  I don't like Howard in net, but I can't fault their logic for picking him.

Overall: I think I'd prefer to see Ryan over Stepan, Yandle over Carlson, and I think I can live with Howard as the 3rd netminder.  Jack Johnson vs Fowler is almost a wash, given their play this year, but I'd have liked to have Johnson's Olympic experience on the d-line a hair more than the better season's Fowler is having (plus I can't get past the fact that he's had a -25 AND a -28 season under his belt...)

Stepan is the 5th best center, and thats all there is to it. 99% of the time, the extra forward is a center, for versatility. Its the smart choice.

Stepan is no slouch. 3rd on the team in scoring. lead the team last year. Good defensively, and was the captain of the gold winning WJC team. He has the skills, resume, international experience, and the position, so the spot is his.

The only real disaster selection that i see is Orpik.

I really wish they'd play one of these up in Canadia. Rangers at Habs or Sabers at Leafs would be sweet. Winnipeg and Calgary might be a little too chilly. Vancouver would be a good spot too.

When the shootout is eventually abolished, we will look back at the 2014 Winter Classic and its shootout result and say "man, WTF were we thinking?"

Of course, I won't though, I've been against shootouts from the beginning.

No apologies, necessary. It's a fair, well thought out post. Though we did start the season as one of the better offenses in the NHL (we've lost some of that for various reasons including injuries). But Yandle's been much better defensively this year compared to the rest of his career. I can't think of one time where I've yelled "What the fark, Yandle!?" this season where I probably would've said it at least 3-4 times at this point in the past. And hell, did you see his goals on Tuesday vs the Oilers!? (apologies to VW for bringing that up again) With the larger international ice, a puck moving defenseman would be a major plus and I'd argue that Yandle is working his way into the list of top D-men at that ability, if he's not there already.

Ultimately, my biggest beef with Yandle's exclusion is the utter disdain Brian Burke gave Dean Lombardi's case for including Yandle. It says to me that Burke seemingly doesn't even watch hockey. It says more to me about why Burke's teams suck so much than anything else.

Speaking of Coyotes defensemen with Olympic hopes, Columbus' Derek McKenzie has been banned 3 games for boarding Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Sweden) last night. No penalty was called for the hit, though there was an ensuing fight between McKenzie and Yandle.

/Stick taps to Lombardi for making the case for Yandle like he did

I'm going to say this to you and everyone else in the hockey threads: We say "don't feed the troll" but this time, we really shouldn't. Don't attack him because it makes us look bad. If he starts attacking one of us, then we can try to get him out of here. But let him be the instigator, not you.
