Remember,

Greece fell
Persia fell
Mongolia Fell
China fell
Egypt fell
Holy Roman Empire Fell
Britain Fell

Every empire through out history has fallen.
And in it's place a new tyrant has always risen.
But during the time of the tyrants leadership.... they are considered the good guys.
If they fall gracefully history looks upon them with reverence.
If they fall while being aggressors they are looked upon as evil.
But in the end all who seek power and to be the world's leader are tyrants.

Very little.

They'd be wearing tricorn hats marching on Washington demanding we increase spending on the military while cutting the social safety net because we need to have the biggest cock on the block.

Except the US isn't nearly as aggressive as they were, relative to the rest of the world. If we forcefully took over South and Central America (for real, not just screwing with governments), grabbed Canada, and took over say half of Europe, then we could talk.

USA has not wanted world peace for over two generations. We got a taste for power and control, and it gave us some fat stacks of cash. It's like when you give a toddler a huge cake of his own and pile heaps of frosting on it and nobody else is allowed to touch it. What a bad idea. Yet here we are.

One of the grand ironies is that you might think Vietnam hates USA. They don't, actually. Most of their populace is under 40 and barely remembers French occupation or USA war, but they sure as heck know about Chinese aggression directed at Vietnam for several hundred years. Nowadays American dollars are almost as tasty as the mother sauces of French cuisine.

I think we've been going about this the wrong way for a long time. I'm afraid that if there is a lesson to be learned here, we'll never know it. I'm afraid that this little experiment has been a good idea wasted on a petulant, dissonant populace. I'm afraid democracy might well be its own worst enemy.

Can you imagine a full bird Colonel presenting a Powerpoint which stated we need to scale it all back? Can you imagine a successful politician claiming publicly during an election campaign that Eisenhower was right and we must resist the military-industrial complex?

Every bubble bursts. That's one of the few valuable lessons of Economics as a social science. When will this one pop? Who will experience the fallout firsthand? Who will learn its painful lessons?

Oh, no. We think it about your military too. In the same way the 300 pound drunk guy looking for a fight outside the bar at 3am is a big fat joke. You still know if you turn you back for a moment he is likely to punch you in the head. So you smile with him, laugh, agree that the brown guy looks dangerous and hope you can convince him you are his friend and he will pick on the brown guy instead of you.

From TFA:

Perhaps not surprisingly, Americans had a slightly different view of the international troublemakers, naming Iran the top threat.

Translation: Iran is the most likely target of the next US aggression.

And yet, most of you would move here given the chance (the other determination of the poll). I guess it makes sense, you'll resent the guy you see as a bully... until you are in his circle of friends, after which you'll join in the fun. Human nature, baby.

It's evolution.

Come on, killing people and blowing shiat up is pretty much the only thing we're good at anymore. Let us have that.

Right, the US is the biggest threat to world peace, but it's not our military, nobody wants a really big war these days us included.  An element in our government damn near caused us to default on debts for the first time in our history over healthcare reform.  That could have caused a global depression that could have lead to WWIII.

Although I'd say the Euro breaking down is more likely and could have similar consequences, but that's harder to peg on one nation.

Ayup. They don't care about the ROI because it's not their money being spent, it's ours.
