Sadly true. It can also push  creationists further into their shell.

Although I agree with Bill Nye I think he's a terrible debater. This may not end well.

I miss Bill Nye when he was back on "Almost Live." Back then he was just a comedian and entertainer, not a spokeman for science.

He was actually better as SpeedWalker, but that character didn't have legs, so to speak.

These two things. As if Ham is gonna be honest. He's just gonna JAQ off and make statements that have been debunked a thousand times.

Farkers should pause and consider for just a minute.  The debate is being held at Ham's creationist museum.  I'm so sure that a fair and impartial panel of judges will sit to decide the outcome.

2014-01-02 08:19:28 PM
This is risky...it's always difficult to debate an idiot.  It's so easy to end up insulting them and then they say "SEE I'M RIGHT, ALL YOU HAVE IS INSULTS".

2014-01-02 08:19:35 PM
It all has to be done.  Junk Thinking has to be rebuffed publicly or it will only fester and grow.

Yes, it makes Ken Ham an even bigger ham, but you can't just ignore people like this.  It is like ignoring your ignorant family members when they blow their mouth off.  They'll do it again and again, and be more confidant each time.

Few will change their mind of February 4th.    That kind of change takes many such moments.  There will be a tiny few that were near the edge that will tip over on the 4th, the rest will have yet another fertilizing of that seed of doubt.

Bill Nye shows scientific evidence.

Ken Ham goes "DDDEEEEERRRP BIBLE SEZ!!" and then quotes discredited crap about 6000 years...

Bill Nye show scientific evidence that shows how dumb the 6000 years thing is.

Ken Ham goes "DDDEEEERRRRPPPP".

No one learns anything.

But can he debate TechnoBevets?

2014-01-02 08:20:41 PM
As evidenced by the comments thus far, the bigger problem isn't whether we lack morality & religion or the good sense to rely on scientific methods to determine our view on the world ... it's that we're unwilling to listen and potentially change our viewpoint based on what others think.

And, while one might initially think the Internet has helped this, it's probably hurt it because instead of people having to deal with divergent viewpoints and achieving harmony in real life, they can go online, find other people who are as nutty as they are and simply reinforce their opinion, such that when they do go out into the real world, they shout louder and refuse to listen to others.

I side with Nye in the whole thing, but everyone commenting here is right -- this ain't going to change a darn thing.  Ham will put his fingers in his ears and sing "La la la," Nye will present all kinds of evidence, and no one's minds will be changed.

All the more reason to simply be a misanthrope.  People are dumb, selfish, unwilling to listen to others and just stupid.

This actually happened when Nye was speaking in Texas.

The country is full of idiots and we keep listening to them.

Of course intelligent design is a viable explanation for mankind's origins.  The FSM does have a sense of humor, after all.  We all know he drank a little bit too much the night before he made humans.

If you had access to a beer volcano, you'd have been drunk, too.

As a side note, I'd like to see Biblical scholars start challenging assholes like Ham on Biblical history/knowledge. FFS, I know more than most of these nitwits, and I only have a BA in comparative religion. I'd love to see a PhD in Biblical Studies or something make them look like idiots on their own terms.

It's almost like, and stop me if I'm going too slow here, debate is a imperfect tool.

The problem with science guys debating creation science/moon landing conspiracy/alien abduction guys is that the science guys keep citing scientific results, when part of the creation science argument is that science is corrupt and intentionally falsifying results.

Sad to say, you have to go outside of science to outflank these nutcases.  You have to attack their credibility, you have to nitpick on the mistakes they make, and you have to use their own words against them.  You can't fight dirty without being a little dirty yourself.  And sometimes you have to give a little ground; science can't say that with 100% accuracy that animals evolved because God could have snapped his fingers and created the whole universe three seconds ago, but oftentimes stubborn scientists will not even suffer to admit this point as a hypothetical.  And that really doesn't help, especially when you're being accused of being closed-minded to non-mainstream theories, as the nutcases will do.

The best way to defeat these people was already figured out by Clarence Darrow in the Scopes trial, that is, pointing out the inconsistencies in their own "rules".  And even that only happened because he was prevented from using his prepared case which relied on scientific testimony.

Hopefully Bill Nye will do better, but I suspect he'll just argue like a scientist arguing with another scientist, and end up not really doing very well.

Ugghhh... It is stupid for Bill Nye to do this. Here's the thing: Publicly debating Bill Nye would look great on Ken Ham's resume. Publicly debating Ken Ham would look bad in Bill Nye's resume. That's a pretty sure sign that what one is doing is a bad idea.

No good will come of this.

If you could reason with scientists there'd be no scientists.

/wait I don't think that's quite right
//I never understand why people debate their "beliefs"...if you believe it to be true then no amount of debating is going to change your mind
///similarly I don't understand why people want to try to convince the believers not to believe...you already know they believe wtf are you going to say that's going to change their mind? Trust me, you don't have anything that intellectually amazing that's going to make them go "oh you were right all along" after however many years they've had of reinforcement

I submitted a better article which would have provoked thoughtful debates on all sides and it was FARKING REDLIT YOU JACKAS MODMINS, SCREW YOU, WHAT DO YOU FARKING WANT FROM ME.

That said this chap is always entertaining and intelligent. Although I found his presence as the villain in that Underworld sequel a bit odd and disconcerting. I mean he did the best he could with the material at hand, but it might as well have been a Milla Jojovich vehicle for all it plopped.

I agree that no good will come of this, but I think debating the issue is healthy. I'm sure the outcome will not be perfect. It may not really change anything. But maybe a few people will start to think about it a little more, and that's what we need.
