I always knew this was a theoretical possibility, but never heard of it in real life until now.

I imagine it helps the twins maintain their seperate identies if they have different birthdays.

Will they be in different grades?

2014-01-02 01:14:45 PM
I heard about the one in Toronto. I wonder if there will be some kind of exception made since what grade you start school is generally based on what year you are born. Would the kid who is born in 2013 start school a year earlier than her sister born in 2014?

One is a girl, the other a boy, I might be wrong but keeping their identities separate shouldn't be an issue.

Here you start school based on your age in September, but I am sure there have been cases splitting that boundary as well - it is pretty easy to request going on one side or the other, though.

On the news they said they will only get the tax deduction on the one born at 11:59 this year.

They can just say they're on the accrual method for claiming dependents.

Why? They get 1 tax write off for 2013 and 2 for 2014.

In Canada it is generally calendar year. For example I turned 17in grade 11 since my birthday was before the school year finished. But I had friends who did not turn 17 until grade 12.

Even if they're in one of the few states where they would straddle a "must be five before Dec 31st" cutoff  (not sure if D.C. is one of those) there's nothing preventing the parents from holding one of them back so they both enter school at the same time.  In most states they'd both be well over one side of any cutoff so it wouldn't matter.

The advances in the ability to induce labor have greatly increased the likelihood of that theoretical possibility happening.

There are still only 365 days a year. I know a man who has a 20-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son - and the kids have the same birthday.

With the laughably massive number of breeders in the world, that this would eventually happen (if it hadn't happened before) was all but a mathematical certainty.

Tax Boy: That's going to suck come tax time.

Boo hoo, they only get a large tax break in 2013 compared to the even bigger tax break they get in 2014.

If the second 2013 deduction is such a make-or-break they can give the 2013 baby up for adoption.  My guess is they won't, and they'll muddle through 2013 somehow.

Twins are usually scheduled C-Sections due to the very real possibility that they get tangled or that the 2nd one gets turned around while the first one is delivered, and 'full term' for twins is 36 weeks (vs 40 weeks for a singleton), so they're going to be smaller and potentially have a few more issues to deal with, so Drs want them out ASAP.

I really doubt the Drs would have scheduled the surgery for midnight, so more than likely it was an emergency, which leans even more heavily toward C-Section. It's possible that they somewhat delayed the birth for the funny dates, but it's incredibly doubtful that it was the mother's idea at all (FTA she seems to be a single mom).

>Dad of twin 3 year old identical girls< - We went in for our checkup, and although we were scheduled to deliver the following day, my wifes blood pressure was through the roof, so they got delivered right then and there. They were born 2 minutes apart and there were two teams of Drs and Nurses to deliver.

Its not a bad idea at all. Credit wise.  It can be a real bear if your sibling has shiatty credit and always shows up on your credit report because everything is so similar.

Had some friends with fraternal twins - a boy and a girl.  We were at a BBQ with them when the kids were about 8.  While they looked uncannily alike, and were dressed similarly, they were obviously a boy and a girl.  When somebody asked their mom if they were identical twins, she replied "no, I changed their diapers - definitely not identical".  To which the reply was  "well of course - but other then that?"

What would be cool would be if one twin was born just before midnight on February 28 of a leap year and the second one came out on February 29.
