Obviously you haven't seen figure skating yet.

Thanks Subby for the 3:10 Gopro ad and the 20 seconds of snowboarding.

On the other hand, TMart has $100 GoPro knock-offs might try one.

agree to disagree. I don't snowboard but love watching the aerial stuff they do and it's jingoistic as all hell but I love watching the prohibitive favorite, from my home country, just absolutely lay waste to the field.

From what I hear he's a douche to the other riders, he's a whiny biatch when he doesn't win, they hate that he's got the corporate backing to build private half-pipes with airbags out in the middle of nowhere so that he can work on new tricks while other pros share time riding the same pipes together.

Other pros ride together, push each other to progress and are friends outside of the competitions while Shaun is off on his island pushing products like Shaun White gum, home fashions and Razor scooters.

In Sochi watch how Shaun (doesn't) interact with the other competitors. He's surrounded by his team while the other guys are all chilling together.

Outside of all that, the main reason they can't stand him is the media over-hype. People get tired of hearing about Shaun White all the time from the announcers when there are so many other badass snowboarders that deserve to have their story heard. They hate the stupid clothes he wears (skinny pants/leather jackets, yada). They hate that he scored a perfect 10 in the 2012 Winter X games even though he hand-dragged just because he's "Shaun White"...

I could go on but it's already tedious and boring.

I dunno, you actually don't hear a lot from the pros. Just an off-hand comment here and there.

I'm really talking about everyday snowboarders, not pros. The vast majority of us don't care for him so much. Shaun White fatigue maybe.

I think he was good for the sport and helped it get mainstream , got kids out there to try snowboarding for themselves. He brought the corporations and serious money into the sport. Some might argue that this wasn't a good thing..but eh.

Anyways, I think he was good for snowboarding initially but it went to his head and we're waiting for the media to start noticing the other guys now. A kid named Kevin Pearce was poised to challenge Shaun for the gold in Vancouver but he busted his brain a few weeks before the Olympics.

If you're into snowboarding check out The Crash Reel. It's a documentary about Kevin's rise to prominence and the time leading up to and after his horrific injury. There's a lot about Shaun White in the documentary. Him and Kevin used to room together until Kevin beat him in the Euro X-games and Shaun kicked him out. hah.

I dunno, sabatoa kind of has a point. Shaun White hasn't been good for snowboarding; Shaun White has been good for Shaun White. And when Shaun White retires, what happens to snowboarding? The sponsors lose interest, the money dries up, and it slinks back into obscurity. Make no mistake, Shaun White is the Wayne Gretzky of this shiat, operating at a level miles above everyone else (I thought the hype was unjustified until I saw firsthand what he pulled off at Cypress in 2010). But he has to parlay that infamy into greater recognition for the sport and leave a legacy, and it doesn't appear like he wants to do that. It's very easy for Shaun to at least try to name-drop the other competitors on the circuit in any of his interviews and articles and other media pieces. He has an enormous opportunity to enlarge the sphere of interest and knowledge in snowboarding worldwide, and if he doesn't feel he has to, then all the gains the sport has made will go with him when he leaves.

Like the subjective judgement of which camera is better? Because the GoPro is the best. You should buy one for when you're on the go or when you're at home. No matter what you do, the GoPro has you covered.

Really, please don't assume those of us in the rest of the world live in the US hype bubble.  Outside of the US, it's arguable that snowboarding's profile has changed not one bit uniquely by his arrival, nor will it be impacted by his departure.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with Wife last winter. X-Games was on and some girl stopped a post-halfpipe run interview to brush snow off the board so her sponsors' logos could be on camera. She snorted derisively. I ask what the deal is and she says, "Sellouts just bother me."

"You don't hate Tony Hawk, and he is arguably a bigger sellout than that chick. People are just trying to get paid."

She says, "Here's the difference. I think if you took away all the money and fame and crap, Tony Hawk would still go out by himself and ride because he loves it. I don't get that from any of these people."

Would Shaun White continue boarding if all the money disappeared? I doubt it.

What good stuff Shaun does for the sport of snow boarding doesn't always equal good for the act of others snowboarding at levels less than pro. If you skated prior to its insane popularity and through its blow up I'd imagine it's the same thing. Not everyone wants to ride crowded parks with noobs in expensive gear flopping all over the place farking up the flow. When all these people look loke, talk like and ride the gear of one person, that person becomes annoying, like Shaun White. Shaun White has been great for the sport and commerce of snowboarding, but I doubt he's made things great at your local halfie after you plonk out for an over priced lift ticket to wait around for douches dressed like Shaun White falling all over the god damn place.

i lived in keystone for about 5 of my 7 or so snowbum years.  one of the features of the terrain park is the 2 man chair that goes right over the big jump line.  those kids dressed like assholes acting like they are king shiat?
they dont last more than a run or two on anything big.  i watched many a season and career end on that line from the lift.
terrain parks tend to be tiered by skill level, so if you dont know what the hell you are doing on a 70 foot jump darwin will make sure you only get one go at it.
all that said, shaun white is not an asset to the sport in the way that tony hawk is to skateboarding.  the key factor being that tony hawk is a likeable dude.  shaun white is not.  as a matter of fact, he is a total prick to his peers and fans.  see the island factor that was posted above.  burton will shell out huge money for him to go practice all by himself on a private half pipe by silverton so he can learn tricks like nobody else can.
snowboarding competitions [and generally all "extreme" sports comps] have always been and always will be more of a team sport.  friends who ride together all the time and push each other, people who are just as happy that their buddy nailed a podium finish instead of them.  White exists outside that sphere and makes it a point to prove that.  tony hawk is talented as white is talented, but one of the two have let that go to their head.
hawk promotes the sport, white promotes himself.

when you are that farking good, you can get away with it.  and he is simply that farking good.  im sure someone will ace him eventually when a company puts that kind of money behind whoever, but until then it is his sport.

i dont hate him, its just disappointing that he hasnt used his fame and talent in a more positive role model type thing.  he always has and always will come off like a spoiled little biatch who has had a season pass every year since he could walk.
the comparison to tony hawk is flawed, but its about the best there is.
i was working phone guest services graveyard shift at the resort when he was in town for a demo for all the zumiez managers who sold extra crap that year.  fire alarms all over the building at 3am, he called.  apparently being named shaun white does not exempt you from paying for damage to condos rented in your name, nor does it omit you from talking to police and firemen for reports.  he was very flustered to hear this info and reminded me many times over the conversation who he was.
dude, if your drunk ass entourage trashes the lobby, sets a condo on fire then blows off all the fire extinguishers on the floor [which included just running through the halls discharging the extinguishers under random doors and at each other] ya might have to talk to some cops and firemen.  some random asshole you talked to when you hit 0 cant turn off the fire alarm and undo the damage.
anecdotal i know, but i have heard many stories in the industry, the guy is just a dick.
but he is the best farking asshole to ever strap a board to his feet and slide down ice.

Maybe (though it wouldn't be olympic without some kind of gymnastics), but some of the worst events are in the "objectively scored" group. As terrible as artistic synchronised trampoline half-pipe dancing is, it mostly isn't as bad sillywalking or breaststroke or hopskipjump or bb gun.
