Conservatives outraged.

Well, that does seem to be at the core of the teachings of Jesus.

And as long as we keep condemening the gays for wanting to adopt, it'll all work out.

Keep popin, pope.

I can't really see a scenario where this Papacy doesn't end with him being thrown into a car trunk

nekom: Well, that does seem to be at the core of the teachings of Jesus.

Actually, Jesus's teaching are more, "Be excellent to one another" not just "Don't be dicks".

Well he IS supposed to be the leading spokesman for the guy  who two thousand years ago was  nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change.

You may be confusing Jesus with Wyld Stallions, though don't feel bad, it's a common mistake

I'm thinking more "sudden unexplained illness that would later turn out to be polonium in his dinner but that nobody will ever autopsy a pope"

Maybe that's a better assessment.  Either way, to see a Pope that seems to understand that message, preach it, and lead by example is pretty cool.  I'm not Catholic or even religious, but it's refreshing to see.

It's spelled Wyld Stallyns, and the quote is "be excellent to each other".

When this pope is willing to stand up for a man to be able to speak his true christian beliefs regarding the pros and cons of a man's asshole versus a woman's snizz, then It'd be easier to believe he was a true christian.

no no, you're thinking the recent JP 2 (guy before Palpatine), I'm talking about JP1 in the 60s who was very liberal and reformist and mysteriously died shortly after taking the office

He has stemmed the loss of followers so there is a chance this will be recognized as a success and that the church does not have to be based in hate and fear to succeed.

In the developed world, at least.  It's a band aid on a severed artery.  He's probably helping to keep the people who were converting to softer versions of Christianity, but long term the church is not going to be able to survive in its current form.  There won't be enough followers to fund it, nor enough people willing to be priests or nuns.

Here's to hoping he will be able to succeed at making Catholicism into a benign fringe, rather than going scorched earth on the way down.

Like I posted in another thread, Christian Protestant religions are making serious in roads in Latin America so the Vatican had to do an end run and emulate them to keep the flock from straying further.

Why? there's no reason for the church to get involved in such a secular, specific political matter. Encouraging Christian beliefs and principles is all they need to do on the issue really. Encouraging everyone to live in peace and treat each other with love really sort of renders the gun control matter irrelevant.

Yes, the pope should help instruct people on proper handgun grips and how to zero an ar15.

They test well with focus groups.

/The disclaimer "Prolonged sermons lasting for more than four hours have been reported infrequently with Pope Frances. If this occurs, see a cardinal immediately" is a bit over the top, though.

Real hard core gun nuts are staunch Christians. They feel God gave them guns to protect themselves from non white, non heterosexual, non Christian sinners. And now, protection from a scary black president.

Somehow I doubt the Lama's going to be welcomed into Francis's arms anytime soon, what with that whole "Being a theocrat who just wants Tibet back so he can send it back into the stone age and have his slaves that he was promised at birth" thing.
