Because when they were stars they were easily manipulated children being shuttled about and posed in front of cameras by the kind of inhuman dirtbags who ran show business 20 years ago.

Doesn't that describe pretty much every actor, regardless of chronological age?

I bet she wasn't making as much as you might think. The Olsen Twins were only making $80,000 per episode at the end of the run, which is good money of course, but not exactly "set for life" money. I'm guessing Jodie was not making anything near that.

By the time she paid taxes, her agent(s), etc, it was probably enough for her and her family to live comfortably in LA, but maybe not enough to put a bunch away or anything.

This.  Usually the studio offers what looks like a great deal (like the $80k the Olsen's were paid), and the child actor's family sees that has big bucks, and takes it.  Unless you have a good agent that knows how much of a commodity you are...then they'll ask for thinks like back end points, and syndication clauses.

Not to mention they were children who most often lack the ability to understand how to plan for the future. They have large sums of money coming in and don't take into consideration that it will stop when they are no longer a commodity. Add in the fun of drugs, booze and sexual atmosphere and how many kids did you know growing up that would have walked away sober and set for life?
//Most of the train-wrecks I grew up with did not come anywhere near this level of money but still managed to do heavy damage to their lives with the drugs and booze.

2014-01-02 10:14:42 AM
Hmm... that is pretty low.

Was this true of TV stars in general making such low amounts of money?  You would think after a few successful seasons, they would have a bit of leverage at re-negotiation time.

Seems to me like it would be in the agents best interest to set them up some kind of trust that earned interest and make it accessible when they turn 21 or something. Upon it maturing, said agent gets a cut and the rest is available to the child star with a requirement that they attend a course on proper money management.

*shrugs*

Plus as the agent, if the child star grows up not being a retard, it'd be in their interest too since I imagine they'd continue getting jobs and you'd continue getting a check representing them.

The problem is it's usually a parent that becomes the kid's manager.  There is a cost to that too.  And from what it sounds like, a majority of the time, the kids are bone dry after the parents cut.

4. Porn and/or Death
5. Comeback

Must not have been much of an addiction, or maybe she could afford good meth.

In California, there's a law that requires precisely that. The problem is that it doesn't stop a kid from blowing all their money on meth and blow when they reach adulthood.
