The foot was taken to a crime lab as detectives work to identify the remains.

I'm going to go with "a foot".

This was happening in and around Vancouver BC recently.

What they think happens is normal people fall overboard, or jump/drown. The body eventually is eaten/decomposes/sinks/is washed out to sea. However, if the body had on track shoes, the shoes will tend to want to float. As the shoe will float, eventually foot bones will come detachedfrom the rest of the body. The shoe with the bones of the foot will float, and floats back to shore somewhere.

Didn't used to happen that much because shoes didn't used to be buoyant, but with widespread adoption of nike/adidas style shoes, it has more chance of happening now.

I am usually not a betting person but I would wager this is aftermath of the Japanese tsumani. Some poor SOB who didn't make it and ended up as fish food.

I don't think it would have made it to the east coast of Florida.

I've seen documentaries on the phenomenon and the conclusion is pretty simple.

As mentioned above, the footwear is important for the fact that the foot 'survives' inside of the track shoe and floats, carried by currents and tidal flows - this is why a large amount of feet gets found in the same areas.

As to why only the foot gets found...the likelihood is that they came from jumpers. The impact being so strong that ankle-breakage is very common.

People speculating that the Japanese tsunami is connected is over reaching it and was dispelled in the documentary I saw. Again, it's to do with waterways, currents, tidal movements etc, and they concluded where these feet were found (in Vancouver) were a water travelling impossibility.

No big deal. They wash up here in Vancouver, BC all time. I think they've found one match out of eight or so in the last five years. I just wish they would throw the little ones back.
