(Daily Mail)   Church of England still calls "The Life of Brian" blasphemous 34 years after its release. Just kidding. Now they are saying it's an 'extraordinary tribute to Jesus'   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 66

In another scene a leper complains that in healing him, the Messiah has deprived him of his livelihood as a beggar.

'Couldn't you reverse things and give me a bit of a bad leg, say, for every Tuesday and Wednesday?' he pleads.

That isn't what he says... The ex-leper was thinking of asking Jesus to make him lame in the middle of the week, beggable but not as bad as leprosy.

The reminds me of how churches over here in the States weren't too fond of The Simpsons when it first came out. Now, many churches love the show because it's one of the few television shows with a family that actually goes to church, prays before meals, and actually struggles with issues of faith. Plus, Ned Flanders. (Stupid sexy Flanders)

As a Christian myself, I love Life of Brian. It's a fantastic movie, addressing many of the problems I have with organized Christianity. I am in agreement with the Pythons about Jesus and the Church. When they began to make the movie, they first decided to mock Jesus. Then they read the Bible and decided that Jesus was all right with them. his followers, though, could sod off.

One of the high points in my life is seeing Eric Idle live in his "Not the Messiah" show, which was based on Life of Brian. I got to hear him sing "Always look on the bright side of life" live and in person. That's an item ticked off my bucket list.

For all of you quoting the movie... You don't need a movie to tell you what to think! You don't need anybody! You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!

Did a leader of the Church of England ever say The Life of Brian is blasphemous? Compare, when  The Last Temptation of Christcame out, the Church said it was "in no way blasphemous" and merely criticized the writing and acting for making Jesus seem confused and uncharismatic. Here's Rowan Williams saying the Vatican was wrong to put the novel on the  Index Librorum Prohibitorum. When I think of conservative Christian outrage, Anglicans aren't the image that springs to mind.

Several years ago I saw a guy playing rockabilly/old school rock in a casino in Oklahoma. I was asking him about his Gretsch guitar and he asked me if I knew who Eric Idle was. I guess he played in some musical for Idle & bought the guitar for him. Memory escapes the name of it now, but I remember looking it up on YouTube at the time.

Eh, as with so many things, it depends on the Anglican.  See Mary Whitehouse for an example.

Personally, though, I thought the best response to that came from (I think it was) Cleese, when he argued that at the very worst, it was heretical, not blasphemous.  It made fun of religious doctrine dogma, and schisms at great length, but on the bare handful of occasions Jesus was actually shown, it was perfectly respectful.
