Bullets falling from the sky is old news. Want to get hit by bullets in a new way? In Stockton, CA. the cops have a knife which shoots bullets.

2014-01-01 04:50:46 PM
Well that's stupid. Everyone knows your bullets don't achieve escape velocity unless you shout "WOOOO" really loud as you fire indiscriminately into the air.

FTFA: "The earlier knife-wielding incident will not result in an internal investigation because of the "insignificant" nature of the victim's injuries."

"Yeah we shot him, however he wasn't hurt too badly so it was a good shoot."

WTF?

They busted killing, not injury, IIRC. Bullets will still injure from a few hundred feet up.

I always like playing "was that fireworks or gunfire" on New Year's Eve.

The Mythbusters one only confirmed that when bullets go nearly straight up, and reach an apex where they then fall nearly straight down do they land without lethal danger. As long as the bullet remains travelling in an arcing trajectory, it maintains much of its forward velocity, and can easily kill someone.

Falling bullets are quite capable of  killing people.

It could well be that if they're falling straight down, they'll tumble too much to be going very fast, but not all bullets shot into the air will be like that.

Beautifully and successfully accomplished, kudos.

That's nice. Here in Seattle we are burning down gays (or trying to) and shooting people directly. We don't have time to wait for them to fall.

I never realized this was "a thing" until we found out they have a "don't fire bullets into the French Quarter" public service campaign after someone was hit and killed by a downfalling bullet on the riverwalk in NOLA the year before.

WTF people. We have to actually say, "Don't fire bullets into the air" for you dumbfarkistan idiots? Sometimes I weep for the stupidity of humanity, especially when they continue to vote Republican.

It wasn't busted. They called it plausible. And really, if they wanted to fully vet the story; they would've tried the fire bullets into the air from a non-perpendicular angle to the ground (5 degrees from vertical, let's say).

Mythbusters? You mean that crew of special effects artists? I enjoy the show, because, they illustrate how not to run experiments. You can still die if you're really unlucky.

I was in Baghdad in 2006 when they won a big international soccer game, and there were so many bullets falling out of the sky it sounded like hail pinging off the roof I took shelter under. Intermittant hail, but still.

My upstairs neighbor got arrested for random gunfire last night, 3rd year in a row he did it so the cops sat in the parking lot and watched him do it. Something like a 90 day mandatory stay in jail. I wish they could make him serve it dec 30, 31, and jan 1 every year for 30 years

They can bust it all they want but when I was young I read a story in the paper where a guy was working on his roof an was killed by a single round that fell from the sky. He was working on his roof , wife came out to bring him some iced tea, and found him collapsed on the roof. A cop on the scene saw the hole and thought it was something minor so he put a band aid on it.

Mythbusters has "busted" more than a few rumors that are actually true

Bullets fired straight up loose their fall back at their terminal velocity, enough to hurt like a biatch but not kill. But if you fire just a little bit off the vertical plane, the retain a lot of their ballistic integry, and can be leathal.
When you hear a story about someone getting hit from a mile away by celebratory gunfire, the idiot shooting was obviously not firing straight up.

And actually, I have to make a minor mea culpa because I borrowed the Mythbusters DVD with that episode on it from my library for some holiday free time viewing. I just rewatched that episode because of this thread and they actually said it was confirmed, plausible and busted.

Confirmed because the documented evidence of injury and death from falling bullets, albeit fired at an angle.
Busted because shooting straight up in the air does alter the bullet's motion enough to prevent it from falling normally.
Plausible because it's abnormal to fire a gun straight up in the air and the bullets could injure someone at least.

Either way, if someone sees an idiot firing a gun into the air; they should be allowed to shoot the person right then and there. I fully support removing those idiots from the gene pool.

I've read some dumb things about New Orleans on this website, but the idea that this town or the people firing their guns on New Years Eve are some sort of Republican voting bloc is one of the most ignorant, insipid, tragically stupid things I ever read. I bet you wore beads even though it was not between Twelfth Night and Ash Wednesday and never left the French Quarter except going from and to the airport.
