People who say/believe/pretend his songs pander to the lowest common denominator. I like him and think he's talented. He writes catchy songs. Not every farking good song has to come from bands like the Pixies, Ramones, Black Flag...there's room for all type of musicians. I never understand the hate for Billy Joel.

I can't imagine anyone who knows anything at all about music ever saying that about Billy Joel.  Any world-class musician would be thrilled to play with that guy.

Bill Clinton asked Billy Joel to come to the White House and jam with him.  Billy Joel declined (not for politcal reasons, but basically inferring that Bill Clinton was not in his league of talent)

I dont hate Billy joel but goddam if an eternity went by before I heard Piano Man again, that would be too soon.
All I saw last night was them playing You May be Right, which sounded like they tuned down half a step and played it at 60% normal speed.  Kinda meh.

What you're saying is, there are two kinds of people: those who hate Billy Joel and those who like him. So when one of his songs comes on, there's either sadness or euphoria.

It all sounds weak but I guess it's necessarily to segue into his nostalgia tour at MSG. Which is probably perfect for him now career wise.

Well, no.

My record collection is loaded with albums from the 60s and 70s. Many of my favorite artists and many of the best records of all time are from that era. It was a fantastic time for music.

I loathe Billy Joel. I do not like his music. At all. I do not like him At all.

I don't think it makes me look cool. I don't really care how it makes me look. My opinion has nothing to do with appearances and everything to do with not liking his music and not liking him. I recognize that he is talented and has had a great career. i won't claim that he isn't good at what he does, because objectively, he is.

Doesn't mean I have to like it.

Years of drug and alcohol abuse have destroyed his voice, so I probably won't ever go see him live even if I get the chance... but I do know he puts on quite the rockin show.

Perhaps if he decides to unretire and put out a new album, I may reconsider.

This. Pop's not really my go-to genre, but the man's long, strong run as a top-notch tunesmith cannot be denied. His Greatest Hits Vol I&II are in fairly regular rotation for me.

Pretty much 90% of musicians over the age of 40 make a majority of their money being a touring act.  They do a summer tour, make their money for the year, and go back doing stuff that makes them happy.

Joel has basically said he doesn't want to make new music, he's perfectly happy just farking around.

Saw him live in Phoenix in, I think, 1998. One of my all time favorite concert experiences. Maybe even #1.

I sat near the side of the stage, and there was a hot girl sitting in front of me with who I suppose was an equally hot looking guy. Joel had some kind of beef with them - either real or joking. He kept looking over and at one point said something to them like "F*ck you" but with a smile on his face. I always wondered what the story was, like maybe it was one of his exes or he was just crediting the guy for having the hottest date in the arena.

Touring was not my point. I just called it a "tour" because it sort of is a reverse-tour for him. The world audience coming to him.

Joel probably wants the same thing middle aged Hollywood movie stars want now. A steady, high paying job 15 minutes from home. Which he will get. And the Barclay center show last night (MSG was taken) was his introduction to that open "tour" as more of a nostalgia act. Which is perfect for him I imagine. At least it's not Vegas.

As far as the 90% I cannot say. But the bands I work with do just fine avoiding becoming nostalgia acts. If that's what they want.  No matter how old they get.

Okay, I like Joel's music, the same way I like candy.  You can't not like it.  It's designed solely to be liked.*

But Joel has contributed NOTHING to music, no more than candy has contributed to my health.

You meant to say watered down Bernie Taupin.  I am 45 and Joel had some decent stuff.  I am not the hugest fan but I respect him for his early work.

I never need to here piano man again because I was a manager at Pat Obriens on Bourbon street and heard that song 30 times a day.

However, Joel did write about what was happening in his life, city, and the world at the time.  And his stuff in the 70s was extremely well written.  Especially Prelude to an Angry Young Man.

Piano Man is a grim tale about loser watching other losers trying to grab a moment of fake cheer through a booze induced moment of fleeting happiness.

Always a Woman -  a guy singing about his unfaithful lover who does not seem to mind that she cheats, even brags to the guy who she is farking that she will always come back to him.

Shes Got Away - a nice simple love song

Big Shot - great description of a scene in a era of excess

Captain Jack - another harsh tale of city life and drug abuse

You forgot the best example of a song about "what was happening in his life, city, " -  Scenes from an Italian Restaurant .... I just love that piano/whistle riff.  and yell it along with me: COLD BEER, HOT LIGHTS, MY SWEET ROMANTIC TEENAGE NIGHTS oh oh...

and I always sing along with  The Entertainer - indicates a certain humility?
