(Some Mummer)   It's not every day a man can put on a sequined dress and walk down a street in Philly without repercussions. But today IS that day   (phl17.com) divider line 37

First parades, then they'll want the right to get married.
Slippery slope!

It's a portmanteau of "Milf" and "hummer."

In Philly if you show your titas during a parade, they throw batteries at you.

Lived there 50 years and only went to the parade only once. I don't miss that city at all.

People only do that once a year? Losers.

I just want to go on record as saying that Mummers have always disturbed me.

It has sucked since the city neutered it. The renaming of it with the Sugar House prefix was the end. Now its just a abbreviated version of the parade with casino ads shoved down your throat.

WTH? Milton Berle was born in NYC.

They're like clowns, with 30% more rape.

I'm not surprised to learn that people like doing these sort of events, but I am surprised to hear it's a "thing" as far south as Philly. I only know of it from the Newfoundland tradition, although I know of "seasonal dressing up and acting out vaguely pagan folk theatre" persists in parts of the UK.

Philly? Who knew?

I find it interesting that despite his pioneer status as a TV comedian, the only thing about Berle still discussed a decade after his death is his alleged horse cock.

Posterity: It comes in all sizes.

That's fine. You live in the boonies - you're forgiven.

Perhaps counseling would help you with your feelings of discomfort? Or - you could just stay in the boonies?

Here's an example of the politically incorrect fun featuring the late Joey Vento:

Nothing like a bunch of drunk "manly men" dressing up in drag and prancing down Broad street.

/but in all fairness to them, they are quick to give a guy a beer if he doesn't have one

As a Philly native, I never really got the appeal of the Mummers. But I also never went in person, where I am sure it is a drunkenly good time.

Yes, but then you wouldn't have that opportunity to be smug and superior. You should thank me, really.

I've never seen a man in a dress harassed in Philly. One of the many, many ways Philly is superior to the rural crap pit where I grew up.

I love the Mummers parade. It's one of America's few remaining folk art traditions. Thousands of people participate. Pretty much none of them are trained artists.

It will probably go away at some point or, more likely, be co-opted into some corporate mockery of itself.

But, though I once again didn't get up early enough to make it there, I'm glad it exists. It's the real deal.
