Bomb, gas, or meth?

2014-01-01 11:30:05 AM
Given the location, going with gas or bomb, in that order. perhaps bomb detonated by gas? Gas detonated by bomb?

//my money's on gas

This is certainly a life changing event befitting of the newsflash tag

Those Chechans are very busy people.

2014-01-01 12:11:38 PM
Helicopter pulled off because there's no more flames

/hope it's not as bad as it looks for the people living there

2014-01-01 12:18:20 PM
There's going to be some bodies in there. FD didn't even get inside before 2nd & 3rd floors collapsed into the first.

Meth lab? Terrorists? Idiot construction workers mistaking an apartment complex for the Metrodome?

2014-01-01 01:08:09 PM
The obvious answer is gas.

That being said, aren't there a lot of Somalis living there?

2014-01-01 01:08:26 PM
Well, at least they have a fire to keep them warm.

Well, that's exactly the place I'd expect an IED to go off, alright.

According to the CDC: "In 2010, fire departments responded to 384,000 home fires in the United States, which claimed the lives of 2,640 people (not including firefighters) and injured another 13,350, not including firefighters."  If we had a Newsflash for even the 1% worst of these, that would mean over 10 a day.

2014-01-01 01:14:17 PM
My dad fought a fire in 20 below cold in the early 1970s.  He later told me after that he was never really warm again.

2014-01-01 01:15:39 PM
It's really not quite an "apartment building". It's street level retail with residential units above.

More important: it's NOT the multi-building complex immediately south. That would have been a disaster.

2014-01-01 01:20:40 PM
Well I see the "meth lab" cause has already been floated, so my job is complete.

Gas. Probably. We had a local house blow up an burn like that a couple of weeks ago near my place. Looked just as bad as that.

My neighbor in Minneapolis caused an explosion in an apartment building once. Apparently someone was stealing his firewood he had on the side of the building. So he drilled a hole and stuck in the a quarter stick of dynamite. The results of his work made the local news.

Could you tell us when and where that happened?  I tend to pay attention to the local news and can't believe I would have missed that.
TIA

not sure honestly, I heard the story in passing a few years ago and would have to call him up to get that info. Given that the man in his late 60's now, it could have been quite a while ago. Given his large collection of firearms and shady past though, I don't doubt it in the least.

Despite the injuries and potential fatalities when the search, the aftermath has a kind of odd beauty to it...

Wouldn't think so.  Bunch of Somalis in that area.  When I drove a cab in Minneapolis I usually avoided taking taking dispatched fares In the Cedar-Riverside area.

Minnesotans have almost as fierce a debate on Crack Stack vs. Ghetto in the Sky as we do about the whole Grey Duck fiasco

Why the fark would a Tea Partier do this?  Or a Christian for that matter?  Not saying it was the other, either, but certainly not these two.

Well, it wasn't really his neighbor.  It was his best friend's cousin's neighbor.  And it was a long time ago, back before he was born.

Are you saying that Christians are too stupid to make bombs?  You're a real bigot.

I am guessing old leaky gas line  that leaked enough to trigger a massive explosion when ignited.

Not ruling out a methlab just yet though.

-10 below, old water pipe bursts, damages old gas pipe, gas finds ignition source, and boom, there you have it?

jaybeezey: That being said, aren't there a lot of Somalis living there?

Yeah, it was a Somali complex. From a different article:

"A woman who owns a nearby convenience store tells KSTP the building is a community center that contains apartments, a grocery store and mosque. The first floor is a commercial use area and the second and third floors are apartments."

Winona lost its Islamic Center to fire back in September, and I hope that both fires are deemed accidental...

FOX9 (local TC station):

Cedar ave bldg. that exploded/burned was last inspected in 2012... And there were no issues. Cause of fire unknown and under investigation.
