Captain Steroid: Dammit! Geraldo Rivera opened the wrong safe! :P

I always wanted them to open that vault and find a cage full of dead hookers in a bdsm dungeon.  Seeing Geraldo confronted with a wall of depression-era dildos would be priceless.

Palestinians are sending a delegation to help with the investigation, and bring some fresh bombs.

i actually met the kid who did that. people in the bar knew who he was, and i don't think he paid for a drink the whole night - and this must have been a good year or so after the show aired.

What's unlikely about a Palestinian terrorist operating under false pretenses? They practically wrote the book on  that after taking over the reins of international terror from the dirty papist micks. The only unlikely thing is that he didn't manage to murder innocent women and children with his bomb.

If this was his own bomb, it would be oh-so-appropriate if Mossad was responsible for rigging it to blow up in his face.

That's right. It was those filthy Yids who killed the ambassador. It couldn't have one of the hundreds of thousands of difficult-to-control cells in Hamas, Hezbollah, al-Qaeda, Syrian loyalists, or any other groups. Those guys never get involved in civil wars. They never kill their own for being insufficiently zealous or daring to negotiate with the enemy. There no battle just north of Israel right now that's basically devolved into a holy war between two (or more) sects of Islam. Nope. It was the Joooz all along!

BBC is now saying he was trying to open a safe that hadn't been touched for 20 years, and that a "safety device" may have been to blame.

Yup, the "It was the Mossad!" bunch won't like this.  Just because the Palestinians say it was a "safety device", that's code for "Mossad".  Farking Palestinians, even their "safety devices" are dangerous.

Yup.  Everything bad that happens is automatically Israel's fault.

No.  They'll blame Israel at the first chance.  If they're not already blaming Israel you can pretty much assume it wasn't Israel.  It sounds like they booby-trapped the safe and the information got lost over time.

That is not an unreasonable assertion actually. I worked in one location where the Mosler had a provision for an incendiary device that could be activated to destroy safe contents if the facility was ever breached. It is not unreasonable to assume this guy may have set off something like that, either by not knowing it was there, or maybe it was simply unstable through age and neglect.

tl,dr; Embassies do that, its quite common and not limited to Palestinians.

I thought they normally used incendiary devices to burn the stuff rather than explosives.  Explosives are normally fitted to sensitive pieces of equipment that might be going into harm's way.

Back in the day when I worked on such things, we had thermite. If the enemy ever invaded Honolulu, we were supposed to pile our sensitive stuff in the parking lot, pile on the thermite, and burn it to a puddle. I've never heard of using explosives to destroy sensitive stuff at a land installation. Since destruction could potentially be carried out by mostly untrained personnel (like me), and in a populated area, that makes sense.
