Hmmm, three hours until game time.... {flips on the tv} ..... yep, pregame stuff already (granted NHL Network so it should be expected...) & the insightful comments are about as expected when you're trying to fill/kill three hours of airtime "If the wind is at your back you're going to skate faster, if it's in your face then you're going to be slower...". {Jawdrop} Well thanks for that physics lesson there Sparky.  Time to find something else to pass the time I think.

Regardless, it should be a decent show later even if the teams, who granted have a ton of tradition value, aren't very good this year.  And even though it will probably burn my skin, this Ducks fan (no problem with that team this year....) will have his Red Wing jersey on later on in the day.

/a Fark hockey thread to start the year .... yeah, that's a good way to get things kicked off
//let us just hope that the game will be as good

With all the extra snow removal, it should take about 3.5 hours to play.  If the wind is up like it was yesterday, they will have an extra side switch at the 10 min mark of the 3rd as well.
The Winter Classic is not about good hockey, it's about evoking some mythical pond hockey past, and with two original six teams with a long history, the retro jerseys and goalie pads, the snow falling, they nailed it again.  It helps that they are both back in the same division, and currently tied & holding the two East 'wild card' playoff spots...

I was at the Big Chill a couple years ago, it was amazing to watch a hockey game in that building with over a hundred thousand fellow hockey fans. Alas, the Winter Classic tickets were too pricey for me to go to Hockey at the Big House 2: Red & Blue Boogaloo.

Go Wings!

It's too bad that the Blue Jackets aren't playing today rather than the Leafs.  It would be great to have an Ohio vs Michigan game at the Big House but with the Ohio team dressed in blue & the Michigan one in red - heads would be exploding all over the place.

If there's any God at all, this game will end in regulation or overtime.

A shootout in front of the biggest hockey crowd ever would be turrible. Just turrible.

Well, I hate the Red Wings and Maple Leafs fans have a habit of annoyance. Hard to root for either. Guess I'll be "that guy" and find my loyalties based on my fantasy team's roster. Kessel, Phaneuf and Bernier dictate I can continue hating the Wings.

I leave before every shootout. Because fark Bettman, that's why.

I'm not a Wings or a Leafs fan but I so wish I could be there. This is gonna be one hell of a party

2014-01-01 12:44:04 PM
So, on one hand I can see how it would be cool in the biggest hockey crowd ever, but on the other, as the photo in TFA shows, the Big House is not set up well for hockey, and anyone past the first dozen or so rows isn't going to be able to see anything going on in that rink.

Still, it's impressive they were able to sell out 110K tickets to a hockey game.

Even the best seats are 3m away from the ice.  The venue is not good for hockey fans, just great for bringing in dollars.

At the Habs/Oilers Winter Classic many years back, out of about 63K tickets, maybe a third were available for purchase by the general public, the bulk were corporate/government/NHL swag. It was the hottest ticket on the coldest day in town.

Hockey!

If there is a God she watches hockey!

What a great day for the NHL and for fans. Okay...so it's a better day for those that can afford tickets to the game.

1) NHL Network is terrible. Just terrible. Borderline unwatchable at times. They need to blow that network up and start over. Maybe the new Canadian TV deal will force them to do just that (since they have quite a few TSN people there).

2) Since we are roughly halfway done with the season (we'll actually pass halfway for total games played tomorrow), now would be a good time to repost my NHL Alternative Points Systems spreadsheet. (Please work, you damn link!)

I'll spare everyone the explanations unless asked. But some of the figures through last night's games of note:

Most regulation wins: Pittsburgh and Chicago at 24
Most regulation losses: Buffalo at 25

Most OT wins (not including shootouts, remember): Vancouver and New Jersey at 5 (they each have 2 OT losses, too)
Most OT losses: Carolina at 6.
5 teams have not won a game in the OT period: Florida, Philadelphia and Minnesota each has 1 OT loss. Chicago, of all teams, has 2 OT losses. And the NY Islanders have 4.
Only Boston hasn't lost in OT, with 3 wins.

Most shootout wins: Washington at 8 (out of 12 SOs)
Most SO losses: Detroit (1 win) and New Jersey at 6.
NJ and Nashville each have 0 SO wins (Nashville only has 3 SO losses).
Only Pittsburgh has 0 SO losses (3 wins)

Through yesterday, 73.6% of all games were decided in regulation. 10.3% ended in OT and 16.1% went to a shootout.

The one thing that perplexes me so far is that the readded Heritage Classic is in March. Okay?

I went to the Big Chill (hockey game at Michigan Stadium between U of M and MSU held a few years ago), I was around the 50th row and I could see fine.

Yeah, I don't even see why you would bother in this weather.

And why are there literally NO SEATS rinkside?

My wife just landed in Detroit on a flight connecting her (from Memphis to San Francisco) and sent me a shot of the view outside her plane window. Definitely matched what I'm seeing on the stream.

The funny part that she just realized: she was in Memphis because her father passed away; her father was a Blackhawks fan and had this awesome old sweater. She's wearing it home because it's, well, really big.

She just realized that she's going to be walking around the Detroit airport in a Blackhawks sweater.

/told her to keep her head down.

Anyone know anything about Carolina's Tim Gleason coming to Toronto?  Car didn't play him last night, and not at practice today, so a deal must be close.... but there were other teams interested too..

/If it's basically straight up for Liles, I hope the let Liles play today, that would really suck to be that close to the W.C. and not play.

Once again Bettman has blown a great opportunity. What a waste to build all those 16K to 20K arenas under his watch when today proves the NHL could have built 90K to 110K capacity venues across the US and Canada.

Just put a lid on the racetracks, and BOOM, instant sellouts, even in Phoenix.  It's so simple!

One of the Leafs was wearing military style camo-like face paint. I don't think they're gonna let ya play like that, chief.

Happy New Year all.

I think it would be interesting to see a thermal image of the stadium.  I wonder if all that body heat makes a difference
