I spent my year trying to get help for people who were raped by priests, and brainwashed into believing in hell.

After a long conversation at a Chinese buffet, a very diverse group of my friends agreed  that shame is to Catholics as guilt is to Jews.

Discuss.

"During his first year as pope, Francis has stressed that he wants the Catholic church to be a "poor" church, focused on reaching out to those who live on the margins of society and others in need. "

I wonder how far he will be willing to take this. Will we see him start to sell off Church assets? Or is he just speaking metaphorically?

I don't think he can actually *SELL* church assets anymore than the president can "Sell" the whitehouse.

More likely that Francis just hands them out for free.

I like that picking a pope not from the Holy Roman Empire regions results in a more charitable face to the church. It can't be because HRE parts of the Catholic faith have a tradition of theological circlejerking; must be a radical on the throne.

I do like the new pope, though.

"All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need... fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little-"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

"They're not the same at all!"

YOU THINK SO? THEN TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET-Death waved a hand. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.

"Yes, but people have got to believe that, or what's the point-"

MY POINT EXACTLY."

I had to deal with the church a few years back in Colombia when my grandmother died and I went to put her ashes in a family crypt that the family had purchased in 1900, they had actually bought two, and each crypt was made to hold 20 canisters of ashes.

I went over to the cathedral and I was informed that the church had decided that each crypt could only hold up to four people and any more over you had to purchase another crypt, and that until I paid the the back rent on both family units, I could not put old grandma to rest, and they would evict the other dead relatives, and I could pick  them up in  a couple of days.

Admittedly, I toyed with the idea of having a bunch of dead relatives in a trophy case.

But, my grandmother was a meticulous record keeper and she had the original bill of sale that her father had been given that stated that he bought the two large crypts and then paid a very large fee so that there would be no rent charged as the fee was to be kept to draw interest to pay for the maintenance of the crypt.  What kind of maintenance of two boxes in the wall need?

I had to take it all the way up to an Arch Bishop, who intervened when I threatened legal action, because a contract is a contract.  And the Arch Bishop found out the local priest had been scamming people like that for years...

My grandmother used to call it "the monument to cement" because it is one of the largest buildings in town.  Only to be completed by a giant buzzard man holding Simon Bolivars visage.

Actually, Rome did it as  a PR move.

1. Protestant, Christian churches has been making having inroads into Latin America, and people who do not jump ship have stopped going to church.  My familys town in Colombia has a Baptist church where the locals sing spirituals and testify, and it actually has a large congregation.

2. To win back latin america, they chose a Latin American pope.  Here is the catch, to satisfy Rome the Pope is from pure Italian heritage, so it is not like they are exactly letting a dirty spic in the Vatican.

They saw the teachings of Jesus being successful in other congregations and decided to embrace it.

Time will only tell how far they take it.

Because I still see priests in South America living in Mansions, driven around in Mercedes, and eating in the best restaurants.

I have a friend who is a Jesuit Bishop who regular will go out drinking with me, wearing full robes, and I know he has a girlfriend on the side.  He is the only priest I trust.

Every time I hear something new about Francis, the bigger I expect the fall from the pedestal to be. (Note: I'm not hoping that'll happen. It's just that his predecessors don't exactly have the best track record for not being asshats.)

At this point, I'm expecting to find out that the man has 50 hookers dressed like Oompa-Loompas locked in an S&M dungeon in the basement of the Castel Sant'Angelo. Also, a chunk of the Vatican Archives might have been converted to holding spaces for a metric farkton of funny white powder.

He's actually started.  You heard how he took care of that German 'Bishop of Bling' to send a message loud and clear.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/german-bishop-of-blin gs -multimillion-euro-mansion-to-be-used-to-serve-needy-8907623.html

You have to start with 'baby steps' after 2000 years.
We can only hope he can keep up the momentum.
