Funny. I called out the local paper for those quotes. Their response? Publish my letter but say the quotes were "controversial". Guess facts are controversial to the GOTP.

The GOP trying to present Lincoln as one of their own continues to amaze.  You simply cannot fly that silly ass battle flag and say you follow in the footsteps of Lincoln.

Hmm, is this the same bunch of quotes we see all the time that were invented by a Prosperity Gospel preacher?

Yup.  Called it.

In the annals of dishonest political speech, we have "Reaganite attributions of things never said"* and "Paul Rand plagiarisms"*. Either you're putting words in other people's mouths or stealing the words out of 'em.

In all fairness, when your entire party platform is chock full of goodies like disbanding the department of education, you have to think that details like factual quoting of history are bound to be ignored.

Jefferson gets it much worse than Lincoln.  Half the crap the Tea Party attributes to him he didn't say, the other half is taken wildly out of context.

I give up.  I was going to post something sarcastic, but I can't come up with something dumber than the actual response from Sen. Melvin.

"If Obama had said it, I would have credited him," Melvin remarked to Capitol News Services. "I know he wouldn't have said it, but that was the point."

I see. SO instead your credit to someone who never said it to make them sound valid and it's all Obama's fault you did that?

Does it upset me that he lied? Nope. People do that sometimes.
Does it upset me that other people believed his lies? Nope. People do that sometimes.
Does it upset me that yet another group of people point out his lies? Nope. People do that sometimes.
What upsets me is that when you point out to the average Republican that he is being lied to his response is: "That's the way un huh I like it, I like it."

The modern mantra of the Republican party is--know the truth and it shall set you free to say "fark You" to the truth.

I think we should establish a new school for Republicans to learn how to properly perform citations.  First how to actually do them.  Second, how to appropriately apply credit to correct sources.

This does seem to increasingly describe the GOP bubble.

My uncle used to send me easily-debunkable email forwards, and I would reply to them with Snopes articles. For the longest time he didn't respond to any of my replies, but finally he said "I don't care if it's not true, I like it anyway." We both quit sending each other stuff after that.

They don't want facts, truth or knowledge. They want things that say what they want to hear. It's very, very easy to manipulate people when they reach this state of mind.

I know I got no call to ask for much... but even so, You've got to admit You ain't dealt me no cards in a long time. It's beginning to look like You got things fixed so I can't never win out. So basically he is saying he is even more stupid than everyone thinks he is, so people shouldn't blame him for his actions.

Sounds like normal Republican justification.

"It seemed like it was something that he would say," he said, adding that the misattribution was "news to me."

Why on Earth does that sound like something Lincoln would say?

Here's another one that's been making the rounds:

izquotes.com
1.  I would think Benjamin Franklin would know that "pursuit of happiness" is not in the Constitution.
2.  "You have to catch up with it yourself" is pretty lousy syntax for anyone, let alone Franklin.
3.  There's actually no record of him saying this.

"Now there is no such relation between capital and labor as assumed, nor is there any such thing as a free man being fixed for life in the condition of a hired laborer. Both these assumptions are false, and all inferences from them are groundless.
Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration." -Abraham Lincoln
