i think that's still the case.  what that has to do with Willie's frosted tips is beyond me.

I don't think they're hiding this, seeing as those pics first come to light in an episode where they dragged out the old family photo albums and laughed about how different they all look now.

2013-12-31 12:49:02 PM
Ok... although this is in its "5th season", the show only debuted in March of 2012, so, it isn't even 2 years old yet.   Have no idea how long they've been in negotiations, filming before the first season, etc.  Let's say, 2 years worth, so, they and A&E would have started talking around 2010, maybe in 2009.

So, it is unclear to me how long ago were the "clean cut" photos... were they during the "negotiations" with A&E... were they 7 years ago, 10 years ago?   Everytime I see the "before", they never say when "before" is, which, does have some importance to the context.

I'm not saying they didn't go "Backwoods" for the show (or in attempts to get someone interested in a show), most likely did, but, would be interesting to know how long... did they grow the beards and stuff and THEN approach A&E?

it's somewhat a scandal and they only grew the bears for A&E.  nevermind they were producing shiat for the outdoor channel 3 years before A&E came along.  I'm fairly certain working for yourself/brother has a slightly different dress code than any other office/desk job.

I know if I was my own boss, I'd dress a hell of a lot differently than I do now.

Yeah, the Outdoor channel stuff, Willie still has the big beard, so, the "clean" photos are at least 5 years ago.  Whether they just decided "We'd look good in beards" or "We need beards to get on TV"... who knows.

That's fine. Just make sure if you're skyping pantsless, the camera on your laptop is adjusted to show you from the waist up only.

It takes a long time to grow those beards. If was for the show they were planning far in advance

I heard them referred to as "reality TV oddities" and giggled.  Then I realized they're not oddities at all.  This is the kind of fraud you get with reality TV.  They'd only be odd if they were the real deal.

Whatever.  I'm over it.  I didn't watch the show before, and I'm certainly not going to watch it now (nor anything else on A&E).  So it's not worth getting any more aggravated over it.

If you do family "white t-shirt" photos and the half-blonde dye thing to your hair, you're about as "backwoods" as Rupaul.

I just want to say that I LOATHE those family photos. Why does everyone do them? They are not original, and they never even make the families look good. All I see are a bunch of white shirts. If I see these photos in a photographer's portfolio, I know that photographer has no imagination or style.

This. I have been growing my bead for four years and it doesn't look as good as theirs. So either one of three things is true (a) they have incredible genetics (2) they have been growing beards for a long time or (3) those are some damn fine fake beards.

Any of these are possible. I have no clue which.

Never know for sure, but how often does an entire family change their persona and look all at once?

I remember when my cousin went goth during HS...don't remember the rest of our family doing the same.

The one with Willie is at least 8 years old. His kids are teenagers now and in the picture they look like they are both in elementary school.

I do like that implies there are winners and losers here.  Frankly, I think everyone lost on this one.  But a good partisan insists on victory.

I can grow a beard like nobodies business and even after a couple of years I have never been able to approach the Duck Dynasty guys or like a lot of those folks in the old Civil War pictures.  Now I generally look somewhere between William Tecumseh Sherman and Robert E Lee (when I have been growing for a while), and I guess the difference is that my beard is very curly which is also why I trim or shave it after a while as it just gets too damn itchy.

I'd lay odds that most photographers agree with you, but they still need to get paid.  Customer asks for such a photo after seeing one on the Jones' wall, you would probably do it, then the problem perpetuates itself.  Kinda like how prom pictures all look about the same.

Well the people that produce the Duck merchandise made out really really well.

And I'd argue that at the end of the day A&E wins. They look like chumps (either side you take) but viewership will be up and at the end of the day that's all that matters.
