Yea, yea, subby, $7M/ sounds like a lot now, but as a %/Cap in year 2 it's less than he makes now.  Yes other, better D make less (FOR NOW) but as those contracts come up, they will be $8M+ or more.  The mediocrity part, the low fruit I suppose is to be expected, are they a cup contender? No, probably not yet... but they got within 10 mins of beating a team that was in the first round last year, and since picked up Bernier to help with that, Clarkson who needs to not hold his stick so tight, Mason picked up for next to nothing and having a carrier year, and Boland who was awesome until going out long-term with the ankle cut, that I can't wait to see back up to speed.  This is a team moving in the right direction, honest.

I'm happy, because this eliminates the possibility of Brian Burke doing his usual routine and dragging players he likes everywhere he goes.

Phaneuf's return to Calgary would have been....awkward.

But hey, we got Kevin Westgarth yesterday from the Canes.

Plan the parade.

I don't think anybody in Calgary is heartbroken about this news.  Although I feel like Toronto still owes us for both Doug Gilmour and Gary Roberts.

Well it's mid season now, 2 years ago and for a bunch before that they didn't even make the playoffs, last year they did, this year they will, and yea, lose in the playoffs maybe in the second round, whatever, but with all the positive changes since Burke, and now Bell/Rogers Ownership, Leiweke, Nonis, and Loiselle in management, Carlyle behind the bench and better roster every year, I think "a tram moving in the right direction" is pretty fair.

hey you got Matt Stajan!

Of course you would mention Stajan.  Of the four players we got, White is gone, Hagman is somewhere in Finland, and Meyers is out of the game.   He's the only one still in the NHL, let alone with the Flames.

postmediacalgaryherald.files.wordpress.com
Oh yeah... Here is Matt Stajan in his native position:  Crumpled up in a ball on the ice, injured.  Again.

But hey, we're still working our way through that bag of pucks we also got in the trade, so thanks for that.

/At least we got rid of Phaneuf's contract
//actually likes Stajan

Yea, I think the Leafs have done pretty well over the years with the Flames trade wise...  Sorry 'bout that.

In much the same way that Roman Polanski made out fine with that 14 year old girl, yeah.  The Gilmour trade in particular was downright criminal.

But that's ok- it's not like any of those guys went on to win a cup with Toronto, either.  And not being saddled with Phaneuf's salary is a huge bonus for a rebuilding team.  We have to have lots of cap room available for Connor McDavid, donchaknow.

I've been on this planet 45 years and have never witnessed a Toronto Stanley Cup victory.  If all goes according to plan, I'll check out an old man still having not witnessed one.

/Bitter?  Oh hell no.  Really?

Gary Leeman didn't play very well as a Flame, but they managed to trade him a couple of years later for Brian Skrudland, a very good two-way centre.  With Joel Otto, Joe Nieuwendyk and Robert Reichel as their other centres, the Flames were set for domination at the start of the '93 season.

Then they left Skrudland unprotected in the expansion draft because they thought the expansion teams were going to scrimp on player salaries.  The Florida Panthers snagged Skrudland and made him their first team captain.  Skrudland played a total of 16 games as a Flame.

So to sum up ... the Flames essentially traded Doug Gilmour for nothing.  Just like a decade later they essentially traded Dion Phaneuf for a very overpaid fourth line centre.

/God I miss the Cliff Fletcher days

We do have a habit of trading commodities away for nothing.  Since we can't get them via trade, maybe we can lose our way into a draft pick or two over the next few years.

With a team that can't play a full 60 minutes, consistently plays from behind and takes dumb penalties. Yeah, that's not going to bite them in the ass, eventually.

Okay so Can, Sui, USA, Fin, Rus, & Czh are still up in the air who they play in the first playoff round until the end of the Fin-Sui game on now... Swe v. Slo is set and Nor-Ger playing for relegation...

Today they played a lot closer to the whole 60, didn't take many penalties, bad or otherwise, and it took the American kids almost half the game to score first.. and got it back in just a few shifts.  Meanwhile the Americans took a bunch of dumb penalties throwing off their flow...  It'll be fun if we both get to the gold game!

I hope he cuts Regehr a quarter of that and Gunnarsson another.  Those guys, the ones with legitimate defensive skills, made Phaneuf his millions.  He's Tie Domi with a better slapshot without them.

I have no issues with this deal.  It's a fair deal, taken at what will be in years 2 and 3, a bit less than fair market value.

Now, just get rid of Carlyle and pair Dion with someone who can compliment his skill set, and this team will improve.

Right now though, it's a gong show. Reims and Berns are the #1 and #2 reason we even are where we are in the standings.  Running out the likes of Fraser, Ranger and Orr out there on a nightly basis is not doing this team any favors. Nor are his coaching abilities.

My friend and I were talking during the game and we both came to the conclusion that we wished Probert was still alive so he and Domi could have squared off at center ice one last time.

That would have been epic.

Part of the problem with Ranger is they were trying to make him something he's not, but just in the last few games paired with Rielly, by comparison HAS to play that way, and he's settling in, he's not fast like Rielly, so buy default he's the stay at home guy of that pair, they seem to have some chemistry and he's enough of a veteran to help the kid too.
They need a couple of solid big hard to move guys one D and one F and one more center that can win face-offs and they'd match up pretty well with just about anyone in the east.

Have a face-off instead of a coin toss?  Winner gets the play with the wind for the first and last periods?

As a bitter Toronto sports fan I have to say this was actually an acceptable extension. Phaneuf is underrated (and annoying) first defensive line member and the contract isn't 'full no trade'. We're witnessing insane deals for UFAs in all sports right now, this is (sadly) less than full market value.

/also happy because I genuinely believe he wants to play for Toronto.... So rare these days. *cry*
