The new policy allows 40 characters for last names, 40 for first names and 35 for middle names.

That sounds like a challenge.

Wasn't aware a legal document could battle officials, Hawaiian or otherwise. This must be an impresive document, perhaps akin to the Magna Carta. Has it been placed in a museum?

Not sure how one would do so; the headline was completely comprehensible.

Her name is a mouthful, but in this day and age of hyphenated last names, more characters are a real possibility.

Congratulations on raising the limit to 4 characters more than this one example instead of just allowing 50.

Must have been an IT contractor that made the proposal so they can come back in to implement the next round of field resizing.

if she has to deal with checks as often as i do in today's digital/electronic world, i'm sure she'll manage 1 or 2 check endorsements a year

Having been in IT since the 80s - long names were dealt with long ago.  I'm surprised that a place like Hawaii (with its closeness to Asia) had this problem.

/most likely the printer used for the cards couldn't deal with it

True dat.  I work in programming (old skool), and a rule of thumb is to always make your fields larger than you figure they will realistically need to be.  It is also a fact that they will ultimately not be large enough.

Maybe at your company. I've worked plenty of places where the field limits are arbitrarily imposed by someone who thinks "that's good enough". It's not as if reality is going to bump into limits by Oracle.

I have worked at a global company with a 25 character limit on the city field. In what world would that ever make sense? Even before varchars.

And yet the sentence was completely comprehensible to everyone but you two. Since legal documents don't battle, no one should be confused by the headline in any way; they shouldn't "trip". Thus, it is "totes legit".

That, and headlines don't follow many grammar rules and yet are still acceptable.
