I'm betting that those dogs aren't microchipped. And have you ever heard anything about precisely where the Obamas got them? Me, neither.

Slow news day? Try living in Germany.

What earth shattering thing could have happened that you need 24 hour coverage, news tickers and everyone up to and including the chancellor weighting in on the issue?
Was it: [c] Micheal Schumacher bumped his head a little?

Sign number 53 that you have switched your primary language to English is when you write Michael as Micheal...

Um, yeah I doubt that.

Actually, it is true.  But the local authorities are absolute fascists about quarantine.   Same with invasive animals.  Heck, they coopted a bunch of soldiers from Schofield Barracks to help exterminate an invasive frog species.  A single snake sneaking into the port in an agricultural shipment is front page news.

Does the FDA do the quarantine process for Obama dogs?

You are correct. Usually dogs are quarantined for months.

So are he dogs now in a 120 day quarantine period in HI or have they been in quarantine in DC and are now running free. Badly written story, but it's an AP story that has been picked up all over the country.

Having taken pets to Hawaii, not necessarily,  but you have to start the process about six months out if you don't want your pet quarantined.   Much easier if you have a staff to handle those details for you (or so I would assume, I did all that stuff myself).

/always annoyed when celebrities want special treatment for their pets.  It isn't that hard to do it right, you just have to read the farking rules and play by them.

Uh, it's typically spelled Michael in English too.  Also, I've heard about enough news about this guy until his condition changes.  They've even been reporting on tweets about him from unknown people.

The article says that dogs are required to be quarantined for 120 days.  When I've shipped horses, that meant that, for the duration of the quarantine period, the animal was confined to pens in an import compound before they could be released to whichever farm they were going to.

Since the Obamas are not going to be in Hawaii for 4 months, wouldn't that mean that the dogs will be quarantined for longer than the Obamas will be there?  I would think it would make sense for all concerned to leave the dogs in the care and keeping of their able handler back at the White House.

No; they had a 120 day waiting period after blood tests, not a full quarantine, then just an inspection and a little paperwork processing when they got there.

http://hdoa.hawaii.gov/ai/aqs/faq-for-animal-quarantine/

How do I qualify my dog or cat for the 5-day-or-less quarantine? There are several pre-shipment requirements that must be completed to qualify for the 5-day-or-less quarantine (for more detailed information, please see the Rabies Quarantine Brochure):
The pet must have been administered at least two (2) rabies vaccines in its lifetime. The second vaccination must have been administered no less than 30 days after the first vaccination.
In addition, the most recent vaccination must have been given no less than 90 days, and no more than 12 months prior to arrival in Hawaii for 12-month licensed vaccines and no less than 90 days and no more than 36 months prior to arrival in Hawaii for 3-year licensed vaccines;
The pet should be microchipped for identification. The microchip is required to identify the pet with the blood sample;
A blood sample must be sent to an approved laboratory for the OIE-Flourescent Antibody Serum Neutralization Test (OIE-FAVN), which tests for the adequate response to the rabies vaccine. A test result >0.5 IU/ml is required; and
The pet must complete the required waiting period from the date the laboratory receives the blood sample before it may enter the state under the following programs:
5-day-or-less quarantine - requires 120-day pre-arrival waiting period.
If the pre-arrival requirements are not met, then the pet will not qualify for the program and must complete a more lengthy quarantine program.
See FAQs for the 5-day-or-less program.

I do find it highly suspicious that we've never seen the adoption papers.  What are you afraid of Obama?

2013-12-31 10:23:28 AM
If the two rabies shots are given and the blood titer is done there is no waiting period. Otherwise it's 120 days. We routinely see dogs where I work for medical procedures that come from quarantine and go immediately back, they don't mess around here.

Hawaii haws never known a case of rabies, all dogs must be quarantined 120 days, no exceptions.

I have never understood the need to take pets with you on vacation. Of course I don't understand the need for pets. It is like having a kid that never grows up.

If you have an animal it should serve a purpose, livestock, dogs for hunting or security, cats to keep down the rodent population in the outbuildings, equipment sheds etc.

Don't be silly, not all dogs have to stay in quarantine, that's why they get two sets of rabies shots, a rabies titer test, and micro-chipped. Dogs come into Hawaii daily, and as long as the paperwork is in order it's no big deal. Just make sure it's in order. My daughter's dog just had a ridiculous amount of dental work done yesterday and it turns out it would have been cheaper for her to fly here (from SoCal) leave the dog in quarantine, have us call quarantine and bring the dog to our clinic, do the dental work, then send the dog back. Btw, nobody has even mentioned the fact that a tick medication has to be applied (by a vet) two weeks prior to them coming here

Pets make less mess than kids, listen better than kids, and are generally quieter.
I'd rather see a person adopt a pet for companionship than have a baby out of some bizarre delusion that kids improve relationships.

/Yes, I have kids.  No, this does not mean I "love kids".
I love my children, this does not mean I like your kids.

Hawaii USED to have a draconian quarantine policy but it's much different now.  My friend moved to Kauai in May and brought his laberdoodle with with him.  Had to have all of her shots up to date, bloodwork done before hand, and a vet had to meet them at the airport over there to authorize clearance.  Depending on how you look at it, I'd say it's pretty easy and straight forward.

2013-12-31 02:01:21 PM
You can start the quarantine process before going over there now thankfully. The 6 month wait was the only thing keeping me from returning with my dogs. So stupid when we have a clear vaccination history on the dogs.

Didn't see anything about the tick meds on the Dept of Agriculture site the last time I looked. Is it just assumed it is part of the quarantine treatment for Hawaii?

The reason I ask is because they are pretty damn thorough on their requirements and that was the one thing I didn't see. I have the documents sitting in front of me for the vet. So a link to more information would be great.

It is still pretty harsh if you do not follow it to the letter.

Sorry, no...no link, but I work here at a vet's office, and I'm the one doing the paperwork for all the dogs coming and going. When you get the health cert from the vet, have them apply it and mark it down.

2013-12-31 06:05:45 PM
Also note that if your dog is staying in quarantine you need to already have a vet here for any medical treatment they may need. Plan ahead.
