the GOP in pennslyvania is amazingly stupid, short sighted, greedy and well...fairly typical of the breed I suppose.  the one saving grace is that Corbett (our GOP governor) isn't particularly bright.  he's managed to make enemies in his own party as well as outside of it.  that should help come election season.  He took this state down to...what?  45th in job creation and has managed to be an even bigger crony politician than Rendell was back when he ran the show.

Fun fact: Mike Pence was one of the founding members of the Tea Party caucus, so his blatant dickishness is completely out of the blue when he became governor.

"We will repeal Obamacare and deny Medicaid expansion and usher in a new utopia!"
"Um, the hospitals just called. Now they have more people than ever using the ER as the family doctor *and* more people than ever waiting until an easily-treatable condition turns into a months-long acute care nightmare and since those hospitals can't tell people to pound sand the costs of uncompensated care are higher than ever. Oh, and here in Pennsylvania especially those gas driller companies didn't hire local people they just brought in out-of-state workers who aren't getting insurance through their jobs so rural hospitals are being inundated with injured workers who have no means of paying."
"You see! True freedom!"

NH House passed it, Governor is in support. The NH Senate is something like 13 Rs and 12 Dems, and something like 7 of the 13 Rs(the state party all of sudden  follows  the Hastert rule[Gingrich's shiatty rule that he managed to hang on his predecessor] thanks to ALEC) refused to sign on without "more study" so  you could argue that one  person in NH stopped some 40,000 people from getting healthcare, and that really sucks.

Because magic negroes have magic time machines magically raising rates starting 25+ years ago.

The stupid bigotry against the "undeserving poor" vs. the "deserving well off" has got to stop.

This comes down to the fear or fact that states will have to raise taxes to cover a percentage of the Medicaid bill once the full federal subsidy is over.

The advantages of more healthy citizenry...besidesunpaid hospital bills...is lost on most people crying about more taxes.

Can the states who have denied the expansion opt in at a later date? Say a democrat runs for governor in Pennsylvania. Could he run on a "If you elect me Governor, I can opt in to the expansion and five million people will be eligible for Medicare"

MA native...I used to go to FR for the mill stores when i was younger. Love FR.

I just drove through that area on my way off the Cape back to NJ (for my sins). It's interesting to me how the city has changed from the vantage point of 195.

Anyway...MA's healthcare system and universal insurance has helped more than one friend of mine avoid financial ruination.  Nice middle class family, wife gets breast cancer at 34, husband loses job due to layoffs. She and their three kids still get healthcare while he looks for work.

Don't get why the middle class, such as it is, isn't up in arms about that safety net being denied.

Is going to Expand would be a better term. They missed the chance to start it on time due to, you guessed it, political bickering about whether they should expand it or not. Now, the earliest they can expand is probably 1st April.

I live in MI, and never get this state. It seems like anyone, anywhere I talk to is a republican, state legislators are full of republicans and teaparty, Governor is republican, yet has not gone for a republican in President election like forever (most important being W's 2nd term).

Well, it is an honest fear.  The GOP-run legislatures are not going to do anything to create jobs thus drive tax revenue, so knowing how worthless they are they fear the repercussions of their own worthlessness.

Because the middle class, such as it is, either doesn't understand they're being hosed or don't care because those they dislike more are getting farked over as well. It's why the whole "fark the public sector workers for getting a pay raise" argument seems silly. Why aren't you be pissed at the private sector for farking over your wages instead of the public sector for a 1% raise.

A state can opt into the Medicaid portion of the law whenever they want.  However, the Federal money that was set aside to help the States build their own exchange had to be asked for back in 2012, so PA would be on the hook for all costs associated with building that exchange.

From the rhetoric I was hearing, they wanted to reject it wholesale because of taxes.  It was a disingenuous argument though since the 90% federal subsidy would go into the economy, grow the economy and get taxed which would cover the 10% the state would need to pony up.  Plus you'd have the benefit you mentioned of a healthier, more productive work force.
